Another example of why we can't have a normal conversation with the Iranians.
"In Iranian culture, taarof is a complex etiquette of offering and refusing that can confuse outsiders. Diplomatically, it often appears as exaggerated civility: an Iranian official may initially decline an offer several times or couch demands in elaborate flattery. What Vance witnessed, Tehran denying talks while simultaneously describing them in detail, is textbook taarof."

The newly established 'Supreme Fatwa Council' in #Syria has established that it is "acceptable and encouraged to kill dogs that have solid black coats" according to an Islamic Hadith.
WTF did black dogs ever do to you??? Not to mention that solid black dogs (such as labs, retrievers, and Scottish terries) are considered some of the most gentle breeds.
@JohnEdgarCarter@DavidS_Liberdad Not sure how much of that continuous courtesy I can personally handle while trying to have direct and very technical conversation in a finite amount of time.
@JohnEdgarCarter@DavidS_Liberdad Again, and as I tried to explain above, the challenge is differentiating between what's courteous and what's real. It is incredibly tiring to try to have a serious conversation with someone predisposed to altering truths for no purpose besides following social norms.
@JohnEdgarCarter@DavidS_Liberdad Yet this is not an exclusive politician behavior, it is a national cultural norm in Iran. The attitude will exist even when the Iranian negotiators are not actively trying to spin or obfuscate. Do you see the issue?
Over a year and a half ago I advised the Syrian government through multiple televised interviews to support foreign fighters' transition to civilian life through small businesses where they can introduce their foreign cuisines and crafts to the Syrian market. It looks like they are finally taking the advice with Abu Dujana, one of the most prominent foreign fighters in Syria, opening his restaurant in the city of Idlib.
'The Syrian government needs to understand that this is a problem that needs to be addressed and ignoring it isn't going to make it any better'
