In September 2022, Algorand launched a randomness beacon--an important tool that enables on-chain dapps to access secure sources of randomness.

The initial implementation for the beacon was led by @AppBlockchain, who has also maintained its backend service. This work was funded via the AlgoGrants program which ceased operations in 2022.

Going forward, the beacon will instead be maintained by the @AlgoFoundation. The work to migrate the back-end service has begun, and is expected to be complete, tested, and ready for utilization within the next 2-3 weeks. We do not expect any interruption in service during the migration period.

While the beacon will function in exactly the same manner, it will involve deploying new smart contracts. We are sharing this update now so that any application utilizing the beacon can plan ahead and be ready to implement this change when the migration is complete.

Please reach out to the Algorand Foundation team on Discord if you have any questions in the interim, and stay tuned for another update once the new contracts have been deployed.
