@MycoMinisterKY@RCarhartHarris But you’re right — there remains so much about the brain and psychedelics that we don’t know. But there’s also so much that we do. And much of that is thanks to Robin.
The first ever interview about DMT conducted entirely inside a hyperbaric chamber (AFAIK!!)...

Many thanks to @GallowglassPB for copies of this beautiful hardback edition of De Quincy’s classic, introduced by @HamiltonMorris…

My answer is that DMT states of consciousness show clear computatipnal properties that are extraordinary.
In this video I cover how on DMT you may encounter entities that can color hyperbolic surfaces in extremely precise and quick ways, allow for topological transformations with non-trivial properties like turning sequences of experienced into tubes and then comparing them side by side, and identify topological extrema of shapes you have never seen before at sub-second speeds.
Essentially, on DMT you see really sophisticated examples of exotic qualia computing, which causes an immense impression of intelligence, agency, and information processing mastery.

Question for DMT People (and anyone else with insight/knowledge/training/etc):
After ingesting DMT, a recurring theme/impression is not merely the presence of "living entities", but of a profound unshakeable sense of their immense intelligence.
So, my question is: Based on your personal experience (or perhaps just your own insight/ideas), how is this impression of intelligence acquired?
Is it merely their technological/advanced appearance/environment/behaviour?
Is it the complexity of the beings or their environment?
Something else? Is it ineffable but somehow knowable?
So, in short, what gives you the impression that you're encountering beings that are not only living, but far more intelligent than us?
(P.S. I don't think this is a trivial question at all. Recognising intelligence in earthly creatures isn't trivial -- in discarnate entities even less so -- but I'd like ideas)
RT/tags/etc appreciated if you know someone who might have a good idea on this.
Managing to get ripped off by FIVE different Kabukicho bars in one night for a total of 2 million Yen (close to $13,000) should come with some kind of award 🥇
@dmt_quest Well, DMT is lipid soluble so much more likely to be involved with intracellular signalling. Did any of the recent Dean et al microdialysis studies look for 5-MeO?????
It's practically meaningless to compare absolute levels of DMT vs serotonin etc without considering the underlying receptor pharmacology. DMT has at least a 15-30x lower affinity for the 5HT2A receptor compared to serotonin, so even at comparable absolute levels its receptor occupancy is going to be very low.
I think DMT likely has an endogenous function, but more likely imo to be acute neuroprotection when levels are elevated dramatically under certain conditions (e.g. hypoxia) than some sort of constitutive effect on consciousness.
As regards it being a true neurotransmitter, the latest evidence contests that idea:

@PsychoMechanics Yeah I'm aware of all these bodily fluid studies but there have been quite a few studies now that measure endogenous DMT levels in the brain itself (albeit rodents). None, as far as I'm aware (but happy to be proved wrong) have detected 5-MeO-DMT.
