Today is publication day for Mark T. Mitchell's excellent book Breaking Babel. I am working on a review, but for now I'll just say: if you are a Christian thinking about AI, this is a must-read. May we all heed Dr. Mitchell's call to be unapologetic "chauvinists of the real."

Want to have your mind blown?

Everyone thinks that housing is getting expensive.

The median new U.S. home in 1971 cost $25,200.

That was 617.6 oz of gold.

At today's gold price, that's $2,557,096.

The median new home today? About $410,700.

So no, houses didn't get expensive.

Dollars got cheap.

I reread this every year.

I cry like a baby every year.

Todd Beamer died a father, husband, and hero.

Todd: Hello… Operator… listen to me. I can’t speak very loud. This is an emergency. I’m a passenger on a United flight to San Francisco. Our plane has been hijacked.

Lisa: I understand. Can they see you?

Todd: No. There are three that we know of. They have knives — razor knives, like box cutters. Someone announced from the cockpit there was a bomb. It sounded fake.

Lisa: Your name?Todd: Todd Beamer. United Flight 93.Todd: They killed one passenger in first class. They forced most of us back. Fourteen of us here. Five flight attendants. The guy with the bomb ordered us to sit on the floor.

Lisa: Are you okay?

Todd: We’re going down… wait. No. We’re leveling off. We changed directions. We’re flying east again.

Todd: A guy named Jeremy called his wife. She told him two planes hit the World Trade Center. Lisa, is that true?

Lisa: I have to tell you the truth. It’s very bad. Both towers are gone. A third plane hit the Pentagon. Our country is under attack. I’m afraid your plane may be part of their plan.

Todd: Oh God. Lisa, will you do something for me? Call my wife and my kids. Promise me you’ll call.

Lisa: I promise.

Todd: Our home number is… You have the same name as my wife. Lisa. We’ve been married ten years. She’s pregnant with our third child. Tell her I love her. I’ll always love her. We have two boys — David, he’s 3, and Andrew, he’s 1. Tell them their daddy loves them and he is so proud of them. The baby is due January 12th. I saw an ultrasound. We still don’t know if it’s a girl or a boy.

Lisa: I’ll tell them. I promise, Todd.(Lisa patches in the FBI.)

Agent: Todd, your plane is on a course for Washington. Best guess is the White House or the Capitol.

Todd: I understand. I’ll be back.

Todd: Everyone knows this isn’t a normal hijacking. We have decided we will not be pawns in their plot.

Lisa: What are you going to do?

Todd: Four of us are going to rush the one with the bomb. Then the cockpit. A stewardess is getting boiling water. We’ll take them out.

Todd: Would you pray with me?They pray the Lord’s Prayer. Then: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.

Todd: God help me. Jesus help me.Are you guys ready? Let’s Roll.

Last year, a Bitcoin mining company commissioned this satellite readings from this superemitter landfill emitting 1.5 tonnes of methane every single hour!

Mitigating these emissions has the impact of
- taking 263,413 cars off the road - or ...
- planting 1,130,040 acres of US forest

One year later, the project just took another step forward to viability. The landfill owner wants to move ahead with a Bitcoin mining solution, and the economics pan out for everyone.

This is one of 5 landfills now in an advanced stage or discussions with the landfill owner.

Our vision is not that Bitcoin no longer gets energy FUD, it's that Bitcoin becomes widely recognized as a powertool of environmental and social justice

First step is to get the world's first project started on a landfill that's currently venting its methane.

So, LFG!
= landfill gas

🚨ALERT: BITCOIN IS THE LAST HOPE FOR YOUR LIFE🚨

They handed us a civilization where the starter home costs seven years of gross income, college requires a debt instrument normally reserved for emerging-market dictatorships, groceries have become a luxury experience, and retirement is apparently something you unlock after your third medically necessary hip replacement.

Then the people who bought houses for $86,000 lean across the Thanksgiving table and ask why nobody wants to “settle down.”

SETTLE DOWN WHERE, GARY?

THE $640,000 DRYWALL BOX NEXT TO A PANERA BREAD?

You built an economy where a 28-year-old making $90,000 lives with two roommates named Connor, pays $2,400 a month to a private-equity landlord, owns seventeen subscriptions, and receives a push notification every morning explaining that eggs have achieved price discovery.

And somehow the official advice is still...

Work hard. Save dollars. Buy bonds. Contribute to the retirement account. Wait 40 years.

Brother, the currency is being diluted while you are performing breathing exercises in a beige corporate wellness room.

This is the philosophical obscenity at the center of modern fiat civilization:

Human beings trade finite life for money. You get paid in hours of your existence converted into dollars.

Every morning commute, night shift, and missed dinner. Every Sunday evening ruined by the thought of Monday. All the hours staring into Microsoft Teams while a man named Brent says “circle back.”

Those hours are gone FOREVER.

So when the unit storing those hours can be created politically, diluted institutionally, and expanded whenever the system requires another rescue…

...the theft is deeper than inflation.

They are diluting STORED HUMAN TIME.

That is why Bitcoin matters.

Bitcoin introduces something modern people have almost forgotten exists:

A boundary. A monetary object that says "No, you cannot have more because you desire more. You cannot manufacture scarcity because the election is going badly. You cannot vote yourself additional units."

"You cannot summon another ten million Bitcoin because regional banks accidentally spent six years playing leveraged Jenga with duration risk."

The answer is simply "No."

And that “no” may be one of the most morally important properties ever engineered into money.

Because civilization without boundaries becomes extraction.

Every institution discovers that tomorrow can be mortgaged to make today more comfortable.

Politicians borrow from unborn taxpayers.

Corporations borrow from future cash flows.

Consumers borrow from future wages.

Governments borrow from future purchasing power.

Eventually the entire society becomes a gigantic machine for dragging prosperity backward through time and consuming it now.

Then everyone stands around confused about why young people feel like the future has already been sold.

Because it has.

We are LIVING INSIDE the LIQUIDATION SALE of TOMORROW.

Millennials and Gen Z were born near the end of the auction.

The houses were already monetized.

The stocks were already monetized.

The land was already monetized.

The credential system was already monetized.

Healthcare was monetized.

Attention was monetized.

Dating was monetized.

Loneliness was monetized.

Your refrigerator now has a fucking subscription plan.

And then, in the middle of this completely deranged financial petting zoo, an asset appeared that nobody could print.

An asset you could hold without asking JPMorgan for permission.

An asset with global liquidity, absolute scarcity, no CEO, no quarterly earnings call, no bailout hotline, and no need to convince a 74-year-old zoning commissioner named Dale that you deserve access to it.

Of course young people gravitated toward it.

What the hell did you expect?

You gave us monetary nihilism and accidentally invented digital scarcity.

You spent fifty years financializing everything that could breathe and then acted stunned when an entire generation became obsessed with the one asset whose supply curve cannot be negotiated over lunch.

Bitcoin is volatile? Fantastic.

So is spending 40 years storing your labor in a monetary system whose long-term operating procedure is “increase denominator.”

Bitcoin is risky? Life is risky.

Being born after the affordable-housing era is risky.

Depending on Congress for fiscal restraint is risky.

Planning a 40 year retirement around permanently positive real returns is risky.

Holding an asset because a television man in a quarter-zip called it “conservative” is risky.

The entire modern financial system is risk wearing khakis.

Bitcoin simply has the decency to show you the chart.

And maybe Bitcoin fails. Nothing in history owes us victory.

But at least the proposition is coherent: Human time is scarce.

Therefore the thing we use to preserve the product of human labor should probably be scarce too.

A civilization cannot indefinitely tell its young to work more, own less, borrow more, delay children, houses, freedom, and of course, to TRUST the INSTITUTIONS.

Eventually somebody flips the table.

Bitcoin IS the table flip.
