Well, the founder of Dischem, Ivan Saltzman stepped down as CEO in 2023. He transferred billions worth of shares to his sons Mark and Dan. Mark is a major shareholder and is here basically taking me to task for not supporting Israel the way he wants. He also believes @Dischem Foundation's philanthropic work in South Africa, must come with gratitude and obedience towards the state he supports. There are other shareholders but the founders hold about 29/30%.

A bilateral state visit between two sovereign nations is categorically different from a former colonial power summoning the heads of an entire continent to a single meeting to conduct what amounts to a collective audience. Trump visiting China is two states conducting diplomacy as equals. Macron convening his rebranded France-Africa summit is one European nation gathering 30+ African countries into a room as though the continent were a single client to be managed.

You never see France convening all Arab heads of state to announce what France has decided is good for the Arab world. You never see a France-Latin America summit where Macron summons every South American president simultaneously to receive his 20 billion euros investment pledges and his vision for their continent.

China does not convene all of Europe. The United States does not gather every Asian head of state into one room for a US-Asia summit. These formats, France-Africa, US-Africa, Russia-Africa, Israel-Africa, exist exclusively in relation to Africa. Only Africa gets summoned. Only Africa gets managed collectively.

So no, it is not that Pan-Africanists cannot say anything about Trump in China. It is that we are not sufficiently intellectually impaired to fail to distinguish between a bilateral state visit and a colonial power staging a continental audience.

#Montreal Food Tour: Day 14

My main motivation for coming to Montreal is the dream I’ve had since I was a sixteen-year-old culinary arts apprentice training in classical French cuisine.

From the incredible meal I had at Monarque and the unforgettable company I shared at L’Express to the elegant and refined experience at Restaurant Bonaparte, each meal brought with it, not only a taste of the best food on the continent, but also a piece of the city in each bite. I’m leaving with a heavy heart and tears in my eyes knowing that I’ll never get a chance to experience Montreal for the first time again.

It wasn’t perfect, but it was absolutely perfect for me at a time in my life when I really needed it.

I didn’t disclose during my trip that I have severe degenerative chronic illness and I’m not sure if I’ll ever have the opportunity to travel like this again. I definitely plan on revisiting Montreal but I don’t know if I’ll have the freedom of mobility and the energy to experience it the way that I did this time. That’s part of what made it so special.

For my last meal, I wanted to wrap up Montreal in a big bow and send myself off with a bang. I also wanted to go back to my roots—to the fundamentals, the classics, to the reason I became a chef in the first place. Elegance, refinement, exquisite attention to detail—that complex, perfectly executed French food that I strived for so many years to perfect.

As soon as reservations opened, I booked a six course menu dégustation that would demontrate what it really meant to spend your whole career perfecting your craft, and doing so in a way that leaves your guests not only satisfied but awestruck. The kind of food that is simple on the plate, but dances on your palette and lives in your soul long after the final morsel is swallowed.

My personal selections for the meal were the lobster bisque, fois gras creme brûlée, confit rabbit, a complementary dish of the mushroom ravioli, lemon and tarragon sorbet, roasted lamb with squash purée, and a selection of fine pastries—mandarin crème brûlée, maple berry cheesecake, and a raspberry macaron.

Every element of every dish was executed to absolute perfection. It’s impossible to pick a favourite one, but the standouts were the mushroom ravioli with incredibly delicate pasta, and the impeccably executed foie gras crème brûlée, with a perfectly thin crust and brunoise pear.

As each dish came out, it was expertly paired with the perfect wine accompaniment. I really commend the sommelier for taking the time to consider the flavour profiles of the food and match it expertly to each wine. Not only did they make the food better, but the food made the different nuances of each wine truly sing.

The space was incredible, very elegant and exactly what I wanted for my last meal in Montreal. The service was impeccable. As each dish was served, they explained the different elements, how they were executed, and how each wine was chosen to pair perfectly with each course. Friendly, attentive, warm, welcoming, and enthusiastic. They know how good the food is. They know why people are coming there specifically for their cuisine.

Everything about this meal hit the mark and left me with a yearning for everything that made the last two weeks so incredible.

I write this review with tears in my eyes as both a thank you and goodbye to Montreal and its wonderful people. Even with my horrible sense of direction, difficulty navigating the taxi service, and the lady beside me FaceTiming her friend during a $200 meal, I can’t really say anything bad about Montreal. It exceeded my expectations in every way.

The generosity of spirit and the joie de vivre of the people I’ve encountered here will occupy my memory forever. And anytime I hear the word, “Montreal”, I’ll look back with immense fondness on two of the best weeks of my life.

Merci du fond du cœur pour cette expérience inoubliable. Je ne l’oublierai jamais.

Israel is running a network of torture camps for Palestinians. Our reports, Welcome to Hell and Hell on Earth, extensively documented a reality of extreme violence, starvation, and torture.

Now, in a major @nytimes investigation, journalist @NickKristof published terrible testimonies concerning sexual violence and the use of sodomy as a tool of interrogation and humiliation by Israeli forces.

Palestinian prisoners are subjected to severe violence, deliberate humiliation, starvation, sleep deprivation, denial of medical care, and abuse in every facility where they are held.

These abusive practices are fully backed by the political leadership, which openly boasts about the harsh prison conditions. Some inmates are subjected to severe sexual assaults.

At least 88 Palestinians have died in Israeli detention facilities since October 2023 as a result of inhumane conditions, violence, starvation, and the denial of medical treatment.

Despite the extensive evidence, media investigations, and reports issued by Israeli and international organizations documenting torture in Israeli prisons, the international community continues to stand by and allow Israel to commit crimes against the Palestinian people.
