🚨HAPPENING NOW🚨 Citywide organizations, tenants, and advocates rally against Luxury Developer Takeover “Innovation QNS” in Astoria! They rally today against the proposed rezoning which will gentrify and displace working class immigrant communities of color.
#AstoriaNotForSale
UPDATE: the excavator Chetrit placed last week has been REMOVED! 🔥🔥🔥The fight for our neighborhood continues, but this confirms what we know: organized action WORKS. We've filed a zoning challenge + plan to keep our foot on the gas
If the NYPD were an army, it would be one of the largest in the world. It has offices in 11 foreign cities. It has six submarine drones. If it can't stop an attack in its own city's subway system, it's not because of a lack of funding.
But that doesn't matter b/c today, we were organized & we showed up to let ppl know that we'll be here to #CheckChetrit every step of the way & we will fight till the end for community control through our @TwoBridgesPlan#StoptheTowersSaveOurHomes
CAAAV leaders Ms. Liu & Carry, Paula from @TakerootNYC, and AM @yuhline delivered a letter to @NYC_Buildings officials w/ over 100 signatures from Two Bridges asking DoB to reject Chetrit's permits. We asked for a meeting w/ the commissioner - looking forward 2 hearing from them
Michelle from @GOLESNYC says of the lack of accountability from Chetrit: "The towers are being built over an old gas station site, but still the community has received no comprehensive report from developers about the findings & the steps they intend to take to mitigate the harm"
@yuhline on looming 421A expiration deadline: "Chetrit is scared...As the program ends, wealthy developers, especially ones w/ a history of building violations & [unsafe] workplace conditions are going to do their hardest to ram their projects through before it expires"
The crowd was quiet for a moment of silence to honor the lives of those who passed because of unsafe working conditions - there are too many stories of death linked to luxury projects. We continue fighting until there r no more. Ty for uplifting their names & lives @NICE4Workers
Diana from @NICE4Workers spoke on the deaths of construction workers due to dangerous work sites, saying: "These sort of projects are racist, not only because they displace people of color, they displace low-income tenants. But they also LITERALLY kill people of color."
Mrs. Liang, founder and leader of Chinatown Tenants Union, says: "Chetrit Group is going to force the eviction of residents of Chinatown for the construction of these high-rise luxury buildings. This is forced displacement of low-income residents. This is racism!"
We gathered here in front of @NYC_Buildings to #CheckChetrit. Members of the community spoke at length about the displacement and fatal impact that Chetrit would bring to our neighborhood w these luxury towers
