What makes us commit, and get into action?
That's an important question in the light of what happened starting 2020. People have lost interest in their job, great resignation, quiet quitting, passive behaviour, loss of enthusiasm …
The tactic that was used for pushing people in the desired direction has been to frighten them: Fear.
Fear of getting sick and die, fear of loosing a dear one, fear of social exclusion, fear of losing the job, fear of war, fear of terrorism …
But fear is a bad counsellor. Fear pushes into instant action, and we know the tree possible reactions: run like hell, freeze and become invisible, fight furiously. Fear triggers the automatic survival circuits that we share with animals.
I think that we have been frightened for too long, and it has conditioned us. Everyone. The time has come to think, and reflect.
We can't think when frightened because our rational, intuitive, self-control, empathy, and creative faculties come from a mental place faraway from fear. Fear belongs to the limbic system, and we need to use our higher mental functions, the subtler ones that take humans apart from animals.
We ought to decide by ourselves what should drive us, and refuse to act out of Fear!
The question is then: what scares me, what do I fear? To overcome fear, I should know what triggers it. But it's not enough. Courage is needed that comes from confidence, and makes hope possible.
Reflect on your strengths, on your qualities for nurturing your confidence, and feed your courage.
Also for people close to you.
Which are your strengths, and what could give you confidence?
