🚨 Major crypto security risk ⚠️

A developer’s NPM account got hacked, and malicious code was pushed into core packages like chalk, strip-ansi, color-convert etc..

How this malicious code works is:

- It Injects a crypto clipper → swaps copied wallet addresses with attacker’s
- Hooks into wallet APIs (MetaMask, Phantom) to alter sendTransaction before you even see it
- Can reroute your BTC/ETH/stables directly to hacker

This is serious as,

These packages are in the dependency tree of almost every wallet, exchange, DeFi app, and trading bot. Billions of downloads → systemic risk.

Even hardware wallets aren’t 100% safe.. If the address is changed before it reaches your device, you can still sign a wrong transaction unless you carefully check the screen.

How it was caught:

Not by headlines.. by a random build failure that led devs to inspect “error-ex,” which exposed the wider compromise.

This has happened before too

- 2021: event-stream hack stole BTC
- 2022: PyPI wallet-stealing malware

But this one is bigger → foundational packages, billions of installs.

What you can do right now:

- Users: pause non-urgent transfers, always confirm address on device
- Devs: pin versions, audit package-lock.json, use npm ci for safe builds
- Projects: treat supply-chain security like smart contract audits

One thing i have realised after this is crypto isn’t just about keys and wallets but it’s also about the infrastructure code you don’t see.

If that’s compromised, decentralization won’t save you.. stay safe y’all
