You have noticed it. ChatGPT feels dumber than it used to. Your prompts that worked six months ago produce worse results now. The writing sounds flatter. The ideas sound safer. The internet itself feels like it is shrinking. Every article reads the same. Every email sounds the same. Every answer sounds like it was written by the same voice.

You thought it was you. It is not you.

Researchers at Oxford and Cambridge published a paper in Nature proving what is happening. They call it Model Collapse.

Here is the mechanism in one sentence. AI trained on AI-generated data gets dumber every generation until it forgets what real human data looked like.

The internet is filling with AI-generated content. Blog posts. Articles. Reviews. Comments. Social media. AI companies scrape the internet to train the next generation of models. Which means the next generation of AI is being trained on the output of the current generation.

Each cycle loses information. Not randomly. It loses the rarest, most unusual, most creative parts first. The researchers call these the "tails of the distribution." The weird ideas. The unexpected perspectives. The things that made the internet feel human. Those disappear first.

What remains is the average. The safe. The expected. The bland.

Then the next generation trains on that. And loses more. And the next generation trains on that. And loses more. The researchers proved this is not a slow decline. Major degradation happens within just a few iterations. Even when some of the original human data is preserved.

They tested it on large language models. On image generators. On statistical models. The pattern was the same every time. The output converges toward a narrow, flattened version of reality that looks nothing like the original data.

The lead researcher put it plainly. "Large language models are like fire. A useful tool. But one that pollutes the environment."

The pollution is invisible. You cannot see which sentence on the internet was written by a human and which was written by AI. Neither can the AI that is about to train on it. And once the tails are gone, they do not come back. The damage is irreversible.

This is not a prediction anymore. It is a diagnosis.

The internet you grew up on was built by humans writing things no algorithm would have written. Strange, personal, imperfect, alive. That internet is being diluted. One generation of AI at a time. And the models trained on what remains are learning a smaller and smaller version of the world.

Model Collapse is not a technical problem. It is a cultural one. The thing that made the internet worth reading is the thing that disappears first.

Ja zostałem na fb dosłownie dla trzech grupek, nie obserwuję nic innego. A i tak algorytm podsuwa mi samo gówno, a na te grupki muszę wchodzić ręcznie.

@primoz_ulaga @jakubwiech Każdy, kto ma olej w głowie, czyli może z 60% społeczeństwa. Tymczasem u nas (i np. w USA) o wyniku wyborów decyduje ile, 2-3 pp. głosów? Tak że inwestycja w ogłupianie już głupszej części społeczeństwa wydaje się całkiem rozsądna.

@jakubwiech Ależ przerabialiśmy to już wcześniej: strony zbierają lajki i followy, a potem zmieniają nazwę i zaczynają wrzucać odpowiedni content dla bazy naiwnych odbiorców zbudowanej na slopie. Tak np. tego typu fanpejdże zmieniły się w strony antyszczepionkowe, a później antyukraińskie.

Oczywiście oni wszyscy są wybitnymi fachowcami, dużo się uczyli, ponoszą największą odpowiedzialność na świecie wypisując paracetamol na ból pleców, mądrze wybrali sobie rodziców lekarzy oraz wiadomo, że w USA powszechnie organizowane są zbiórki na leczenie amerykańskich dzieci w Polsce (podobno na Wall Street jest bardzo prestiżowe posiadanie w książce telefonicznej numeru telefonu do pediatry z Radomia lub Kalisza).

Ale równie dobrze albo niewiele mniej zarabiali ludzie w innych trudnych i wymagających nauki dziedzinach - prawnicy, inżynierowie, programiści - więc wybierałeś to, co cię interesowało. A teraz lekarze uwłaszczyli się na publicznej kasie.

@yrilibek 6 lat studiów. A potem masz pewne zatrudnienie. Plus jako programista nie wiem, czy za 10 lat będzie jeszcze popyt na moje usługi. Na większość lekarzy popytu nie byłoby już od dawna przy możliwościach AI, no ale tu ujawnia się moc lobbowania i gwarantowania sobie roboty.

SpaceX is going public on Friday in the largest initial public offering (IPO) in Wall Street history, aiming to raise roughly $75 billion.

According to SpaceX's own public filing, despite a $1.75 trillion valuation, SpaceX remains unprofitable (outside of Starlink),
with $37 billion in accumulated losses.

The filing also rebrands SpaceX as an AI company, attributing 93% of its value to its proprietary AI LLM, Grok.

Yes that's right, people think of SpaceX as a "space company" while SpaceX, according to its own filing, sees itself primarily as an AI company which also shoots rockets into space.

However, SpaceX's AI, Grok, has been so underperforming, that SpaceX is now attempting to buy a competitor AI, "Cursor" for $60 billion, for its own engineers to use.

The entire valuation relies on the Starship rocket, which is still in development and must reach an "insane" flight frequency to meet stated business goals.

How "insane"?

Roughly 10,000 starship flights per year.
The sum total of successful orbital launches in history, that is every rocket successfully launched into space by any country since it was successfully attempted in 1957,

is 6,872.

So in order for SpaceX to be profitable it needs to launch 1.45× the entire history of every orbital launch ever attempted by humanity,

every year.

The IPO appears designed to pay off massive existing debts rather than solely funding new growth, meaning, the people who purchase the IPO share will provide Elon the liquidity he needs to pay SpaceX tens of billions of current debts.

What's more, a dual-class share structure ensures Elon Musk retains over 85% of voting power, effectively insulating him from shareholder oversight or,

most importantly,

future lawsuits.
