@clarapadgham I think it’s ethical to target certain demographics because certain products are more fitting to certain types of people. However, persuasion can turn into manipulation when too much personal information is taken. #UWJ201 #310
@kaseysteinn I think likability and scarcity are some of the most important principles. Likability is what allows a viewer create positive connections with a product. Scarcity heavily motivates a viewer to purchase something since they believe it’s a “now or never” situation. #UWJ201 #310
Do you think companies base their target market profiles on who they believe to be the best fit for their products? Or is it more based on who they can manipulate the most? #UWJ201 #310
@Peichen_Hou I don’t think methods like monetary lotteries have been effective since there is a slim chance you will win. This is not a good enough reason to get vaccinated for many people. Personally, I think the best solution is to provide education on the vaccine. #UWJ201 #310
@Susannah_radick Although it may not technically be our “personal info”, we are still essentially having information collected into a profile identified by an ID number. It isn’t our real names, but it still seems like an invasion of privacy since they can recognize you by a number. #UWJ201 #310
Do you think unengaging advertisements/campaigns are part of the reason vaccination rates have flattened? From what you have seen so far, do you think there has been more of a persuasion or likability method used? #UWJ201 #310
@GracenSpritka I think it is a bit of a double edged sword. Social media is a way to get news that is more unfiltered and can possibly amplify important voices. However, social media is filled with tons of misinformation, which can be harmful to the quality of news. #UWJ201 #310
@aliceehill I think this plan could help lessen the knowledge gap between the different classes of society. If people of lower economic status have the ability to access more information, they can make more informed decisions and be better citizens overall. #UWJ201 #310
In my discussion this week we spoke about the intersection between computer and social science. If programmers focused more on social science
while creating algorithms do you think they would be as efficient? Is efficiency more important than our privacy? #UWJ201 #310
@RifkinHannah I think that with the emergence of social media, people seek more information and place pressure on politicians. Many politicians have turned to attack responses to avoid mass critiquing from social media. #UWJ201 #310
@GovindKishan5 When a politician has a generally negative reputation, attacking the media is often used to try to invalidate claims. However, this isn’t necessarily effective since it can create a stigma of deflection. Charming the media may cultivate more of a mass following. #UWJ201 #310
After my discussion, I’ve been thinking about the concept of a truly neutral media outlet and if it’s possible. If an unbiased media form were to exist, do you think viewers would actively use it? Is part of the draw of media the divisiveness and friction it creates? #UWJ201 #310
