@ohheybrittany hey! i’m a communication student in UW-Madison’s School of Journalism and I’m a big fan of your work with Rolling Stone! What advice do you have for transition from student to professional?

Since indexing has to do with limiting the scope of politics, does this practice cause the political scene to continue as is, and force the citizens to vote for “the lesser of two evils” in elections? How does indexing shape the way we think about politcal systems? #UWJ201 #318
@ellese_martin I think sometimes it can be hard to tell. Sometimes a story doesn’t have to be equal to every argument in order to still be fair. And part of the biggest distinguishes with bias is an intentional distortion of information by the source, which can be hard to prove #UWJ201 #318
@amandamilleruw But, as Prof Wagner pointed out, some stories just don’t have to interview all stances of a topic in order for it to be fair. What I think matters is spending time proportionally on the different arguments to how the public feels about a topic #UWJ201 #318
@amandamilleruw I personally cannot think of a news outlet that does not insert their stance on a topic at all. As much as news outlets try to be as unbiased as possible, everyone still has their personal beliefs, including reporters. (1/2) #UWJ201 #318
I really enjoyed Prof. Culver’s lecture this week. I’m interested to see how new laws and trials emerge relating to defamation online especially, considering Prof. Culver acknowledged how much faster misinformation spreads than info that is accurate. #UWJ201 #318
@SydneyVasquez12 While social media has been around for the last ten years or so, I think its use in recent years has escalated how responsive leaders are to the watchdog function of journalism. Now, leaders can hear dissatisfaction from both the news and the viewers #UWJ201 #318
@Monahdee1 @azrafbak I totally agree with this. Politics is a HUGE topic in news coverage so to remove it altogether would certainly affect how we view both politics and news in a democratic republic. The news is how most people learn about the beliefs and policies of political leaders #UWJ201 #318
This week we learned that news has to meet certain standards to earn the title. Of the key journalistic standards, (accuracy, balance, pure profit maximization, democratic accountability, editorial separation...) which do you think is the most important? #UWJ201 #318
@agarcia1701 This is a really great point. I think that the recentness of the Black Lives Matter protests from this summer provided additional context and an opportunity to compare the treatment of both groups by police and other authorities. #UWJ201 #318
I found it interesting when talking about the US media ecology this week that most media is only owned by a small handful of companies. It really makes me consider how many opportunities there really are for a diversity of perspectives in media. #UWJ201 #318
@RRyanstevens I can definitely see the effects of the 3rd person perceptions in my own life. I think sometimes people will share or post things on social media just because it’s trending or popular, because they think it’s something other people want to see. #UWJ201 #318
From this week’s lecture, I found it interesting with 3rd person perception that the thought of other people being influenced by media can be more influential on us that the media itself. It shows how much media can affect the community, both directly and indirectly #UWJ201 #318
@chicoroskos99 #UWJ201 #318 I definitely agree with you, but I think it is still possible to determine your own stance on a topic by taking information from multiple credible sources and drawing a conclusion based on all of the information.
@Qav47i5cf6qbL0Y I totally agree. The media has a lot of power in determining what light a story is displayed in and what aspects of it to focus on. The framing of an event can shift the public’s attitude of it #UWJ201 #318
#UWJ201 #318 After reading the Atlantic article explaining how the media and education hold no promise in closing the gap in understanding between Democrats and Republicans, I am curious on what will. What medium can allow people to understand each other better politically?
@hubmer2 This is a very modern issue and a good question. Social Media has become so engrained in the way society functions that it would take some experimenting to get the right balance between evolving with the times and not abandoning face-to-face interactions completely #UWJ201 #318
