@ira_hyman Thanks Ira! Hopefully exploratory analyses can provide some insight into the online study results and help build a solid foundation for retrieval enhanced suggestibility studies completed in an online format! Always something else to work towards. π
If substitute teachers could deal with literally everyone in my classes grades K-12 hollering "No it's /AW/-LEE-UH" when they inevitably pronounced my name as uh-LEE-uh then we can all step out of our tiny little pronunciation boxes and learn how to say people's names.
Pro-tip: if someone has a name that is "hard to pronounce" (generally passive aggressive code for "not English"), just learn to pronounce it! No calling people by nicknames or alternate names unless SPECIFICALLY requested. Just ask a couple times and figure it out.
Just deleted over 1,000 emails (university communications, Canvas notifications, etc.). Haven't done that since the summer so my inbox was a mess. What a great way to start the day.
Nothing like compiling three sets of reviewer comments into a single Excel file to really humble a scientist. I should get one of those horribly cheesy and supportive cat posters to put up while I do this.
My dad used to teach high schoolers, but now he works for the state government. He's currently on a call with government employees and he's testing them on what they learned using Kahoot. Don't let anyone tell you your skills aren't transferable.
I just wrote an email to students telling them to take a break, do something fun, and I am proud of them.
I almost burst into tears writing it.
My students are hurting and I can't do anything other than cheer them on while they suffer. Being an educator is painful right now.
@dstephenlindsay @hayleycullen_@Psychonomic_Soc That would be cool! It could be like a mini-networking opportunity for people in similar fields. A shorter (~an hour long) Q&A would be nice for that scenario, perhaps.
Online conference impressions so far:
-Love being able to sit on my couch and watch talks
-Enjoy the chat function
-Much harder for me to focus on talks >15 minutes
-Didn't like the 2-hour long Zoom availability that was required as a poster presenter, very bad for my anxiety
@ira_hyman @dstephenlindsay @hayleycullen_@Psychonomic_Soc Agreed! Ayanna mentioned that recently too. Still easy to pop into just the ones you wanted to see, but just as easy to set up your laptop and let it play.
@meta_michelle Thank you! It's all a new experience for many conference organizers, so hopefully feedback from everyone makes them even better in the future.
-Double check machine-captioned talks for errors in subtitles
-Let people turn off captions and ASL interpretation if they want to reduce distractions
-Provide an option for crowd-sourced translating of captions post-conference
Ideas to improve the ~virtual experience~
-Allow presenters and attendees the option to add pronouns to their name (Alia W. -> Alia W., any pronouns)
-Provide a function for people to pre-submit questions to poster presenters
-Allow people to pause/rewind live presentations
@SocietySpark @ToriPea3@MaddBlackProf @anjames3 @MaddBlackProf: Recognize that not all students will take the βdefaultβ career path of academia.
Faculty advisors need to be flexible and encourage students to pursue other interests.
Yes, this is a challenge as it may lead to a decrease in lab productivity.
