I’m mostly talking to myself in this section. Calling myself out only own bullsh*t because a lot of the times, the things you see in others that may bother you; are reflections of aspects of your own personality.

And then in a smaller way, it’s a reflection on internet keyboard warrior culture. Calling people out about whatever from the safety of one’s keyboard, in one’s room, sometimes with an identity veiled in anonymity. Things that one would rarely consider saying to another’s face in real life, but the detachment and synthetic nature of how we sometimes communicate through these devices, makes it “acceptable”.

And then there is of course the layer that is simply me, the part of me that cannot take it anymore, being the meme of the grumpy old man, telling the stupid kids to get off his lawn; proverbially speaking. This part being my admission that yes, I can be a judgmental b*stard at times; and that I battle with this internally.

What do I mean by the line “Oh I cannot, I cannot take it. Oh when will I, when will I make it?” There’s an obvious dichotomy in those two lines. The duality of being fed up, yet in a way yearning for parts of what you’re fed up of.

It also beckons the question: what does “making it” even mean? We chase things. We chase people. We chase money. We chase experiences. And sometimes we forget what it is specifically that we’re chasing, because we’re so used to the habit of being in motion that we’ve forgotten what the inception point of it all even was in the first place.

In terms of this song, it partially touches on LA culture and the how so many people come here, to LA, to “make it.” How so many are willing to forego parts of themselves, to achieve whatever dreams they have. And how often times, people put up with huge amounts of bullsh*t and so much inauthenticity that they simply cannot take anymore; but decide to eat it, because they’re chasing that very dream they’re subconsciously growing to dislike.

There are more layers to these simple lines, but that’s another story for another time.

On another level, Impostor touches on various archetypes that we find in our modern society.

From those in positions of power, making decisions that generally do not benefit any of us; whilst all the while talking out of both sides of their mouths, trying to convince us that they most definitely do…. To those who vainly “influence cult-ure”, whilst being mostly performative & shallow mercenaries at best…. to the spiritual narcissists; those who utter all the proper & expected prose, in the accepted tonality, dressed in whatever acceptable garb for the part; yet barely contain an ounce of authenticity in the generic & cliched words they preach.

This is a song about the systems we all partake in, which I find to be completely fake. Completely inorganic, & generally disempowering to us all. And I simply cannot take it anymore, if I’m being perfectly honest with you. Yet, here I am, participating in it.

My new single “Impostor” is out now, and I’d love it if you all went and clicked the link in my bio and gave it a listen.

Also, I’d like to thank the team of talented creatives who helped me bring this character and visuals to life. This was all done practically, with zero VFX (digital) and absolutely no AI slop. Pure human talent, and collaboration. No imposters detected here.

Special thanks to Astral Media for helping me put this shoot together, as well as for killing it filming on set and coloring all the footage beautifully. I quite literally couldn’t have done this without you! T’was a jolly good time and fun was had by all the lords and ladies.

Thank you to Johnna J Perez for her amazing talent in helping me bring this character to life and giving me my dream hair in the process. I want my hair to reach my butt lol. It’s gonna take some time to grow it to there but, a guy can dream here now, can’t he?

What can I say about Jo Holland - she’s an absolute badass, and came on board at the 11th hour, after I had to call a last minute audible. She built that incredible headdress from scratch in about 5 days. An absolute legend and incredible artist.

I was fortunate enough to be able to pull wardrobe from an incredible LA based design duo knows as @veniacollection . I am obsessed with all their designs and will own them all one day and be buried in them. The end. Thank you to Christine and to Keeter for making this happen (the pulls not the future funeral garb - but we are planting seeds here, ok?)

Thematically, Impostor’s a multi layered song. But at its core it’s really just a song about how I mostly feel out of place in this world.

And while I’ve always been a different kinda cat, there were some moments in my life where I did try to “lean out” from that person. I sold myself short in many ways, & made myself small in many ways to accommodate others, “not be too much”, or even pretend that everything was fine, when it in fact, was not. Often at the expense of myself, & at the end of the day, this was my choice. My doing. I was the impostor. I wasn’t leading a life in alignment with who I was, & with the person I wanted to be. I wasn’t reflective of the person I wanted to be, in my actions. I was a passenger. And ultimately, that was all on me.

So I decided that it was better being alone, to fully & truly understand & accept myself; & to seriously work through my sh*t rather than surrounding myself with others who didn’t really care; & who were, for the most part being impostors themselves.

And in that time I reflected. Mostly about the man I was, had been, & subsequently wanted to be. I focused on my past “failings” to such a degree that it wasn’t about ownership anymore, rather than self abuse. I’ve never really been one to dwell on the past; I was always more future centric. Something that could be viewed as purpose, drive, vision, ambition….. or obsession. And at the end of the day, being so stuck in the future equally removes you from embracing the present moment, much the same as dwelling on the past does.

On another level, I was tired of living with the impostor syndrome that had plagued me in many ways, for a long while - mostly from feeling that I wasn’t living up to my potential - & was, as I stated above “leaning out of myself”.

I’d be lying if I said that the past several years haven’t changed me in many ways. But I’d also be lying if I didn’t admit that I still battle with many of those internal demons. Those voices that whisper the nastiest things imaginable to you, about yourself, at the most random of moments. I definitely think I work through them better, & they’ve become much more disempowered & in a way, my friends over the course of time, but they’re still there; albeit to a lesser degree.

I still battle impostor syndrome. But it’s been awhile since I’ve felt like an outright impostor, in a world that’s chock-full of them. And that’s the other theme of this song. The world is run by impostors, & most of the systems we adhere to are absolutely full of sh*t. Some ppl know & see this, yet we still play along in our own ways. But that’s not a story for now.

I often look at the structures and systems we choose to adhere to societally, economically, financially, spiritually and more; and can’t help but notice that they’re mostly performative (imo); and riddled with impostors to one degree or another. And then I find myself taking part in these systems that I fundamentally don’t believe in, as I type words into this social media landscape, which I fundamentally don’t connect with whatsoever; but ultimately view as a tool. And I ask myself….. what does that make me?
