WHO IS ATTY. VIRGIL LIGUTAN BEFORE THIS WEEK?

Atty. Virgil Ligutan was a pro bono human rights lawyer before being thrust into the national spotlight this week.

He helped free Bambi Beltran: an award-winning artist, writer, and recipient of the 2020 Deutsche Welle (DW) Freedom of Speech award.

She was arrested on April 19, 2020 without a warrant and was detained for 60 hours because her satirical FB post about the COVID-19 situation in Sitio Zapatera had enraged the late Cebu City Mayor Edgar Labella.

Her second arrest came on August 12, 2020, on a cyber-libel case filed by an April Dequito.

The third arrest was on May 26, 2023 when police from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Cebu Provincial Field Unit (CIDG-PFU) appeared at Beltran’s doorstep around 4 pm.

Ligutan took on the case and made sure that Bambi would get the best legal aid she could. The case has since been dismissed.

And now, he’s a pro bono private prosecutor for the House of Representatives still fighting for human rights and accountability in the impeachment trial of BP Sara Duterte.

Pinagpapaliwanag ng Korte Suprema sina 4th District Quezon City Rep. Bong Suntay at Atty. Ferdinand Topacio kung bakit hindi sila dapat ma-disbar.

Kaugnay ito ng umano'y paglabag ng dalawa sa Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability.

Nag-ugat ang usapin sa malaswang pahayag umano ni Suntay laban sa aktres na si Anne Curtis, at sa bastos umanong komento ni Topacio laban kay Gabriela Rep. Sarah Elago.

Binigyan ng Korte Suprema ng 10 araw sina Suntay at Topacio upang magsumite ng kanilang paliwanag.

Nauna nang pinatawan ng disciplinary action ng Kamara si Suntay dahil sa kaniyang binitawang pahayag.
