I found a prayer in Habakkuk 2:3 this morning...
Lord, for the things You have shown me that have not happened yet, teach me how to wait without losing heart. When the vision takes longer than I expected, keep me from assuming You have forgotten me. When I cannot see movement, keep me from creating movement out of panic. Give me the discernment to know the difference between a promise that needs my obedience and a promise that simply needs my patience.
When everyone around me seems to be moving ahead and my own life feels suspended, keep me from measuring Your faithfulness by somebody else’s timeline. Let me remember that something can be taking longer without being denied. And when I am tempted to walk away because I have waited longer than I thought I would, remind me that “though it linger, wait for it.” Lord, teach me to wait without turning the waiting into evidence that You are not working.

The Bible and Polygamy.

Abraham is our father in faith. He practiced Polygamy. Jacob is the father of the twelve sons from which the twelve tribes of Israel emerged. He was polygamous. David was the man after God's own heart. He married a couple of women. Let's not even bring Uncle Solo here, dude literally married a whole village.

Polygamy is IN THE BIBLE. This is non debatable. Why then does christianity prohibit it? Why should christianity prohibit what is in the bible?

In fact, beyond being in the bible, the strongest argument against the prohibition of Polygamy is that the bible itself doesn't EXPLICITLY condemn or prohibit it. This, for me is more serious than the argument of it being in the bible.

Well, I'm sure everyone is waking up to the reality of the absurdity and sometimes entrapment of 'WHERE IS IT IN THE BIBLE?' There was a time when catholics where buffeted with 'WHERE IS IT IN THE BIBLE' question by non catholics as if something being in the bible or not being in the bible is the Holy grail of doctrine.

If we go by the logic of SHOW ME WHERE IT IS IN THE BIBLE, the proponents of that statement should allow their church members to practice Polygamy because it is in the bible. Hope you see how deeply flawed using IN THE BIBLE argument to determine the truth of a doctrine can be?

Okay, here is the deal with Polygamy. Even though IT IS IN THE BIBLE, it is not the bible's official teaching on marriage. There is a difference between what is DESCRIBED in the bible and what the bible PRESCRIBES.

Abraham lied about his wife, the bible describes it. The same bible is against lying and deceit. By describing how Abraham lied, the bible isn't making lying okay. There are descriptions of war and conflicts in the bible, but the bible doesn't PRESCRIBE war but peace.

Same way, even though the bible describes Polygamy, it doesn't prescribe it. It prescribes monogamy as the ideal marriage. In Mtt 19 Jesus says "A man must leave father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one". The language there is singular; one man one woman. He even made reference to Genesis, saying that God's original plan was one man one wife as in the case of Adam and Eve.

Then in Eph 5:20ff, the language there is monogamy and prescritive. Once more, the description of something in the bible doesn't mean prescription. If we go further in 1Tim, Paul prescribes monogamy as one of the criterion for choosing an ELDER. Monogamy is the PRESCRIPTIVE position of the bible on marriage.

Let's be clear, Polygamy is not a peculiar African culture and monogamy is not a peculiar European culture. Don't come here and tell me monogamy is European culture foisted on us through christianity. The Europeans too practiced Polygamy and concubinage at a certain point in their history. Christianity is part of what made them drop all that.

In fact, most races practiced it or something similar in their primitive stages. Even without christianity, advancement in civilization is making people drop it. With all the responsibilities expected of a man in marriage, who wants to multiply such with multiple wives?

The point here is that Polygamy is IN THE BIBLE as a description of what people did, not a PRESCRIPTION of what the ideal marriage is or should be. Scripture's prescription is monogamy.
