@TheMuseSappho Which is part of what survey courses like LitHum are supposed to teach! But that seems to be not as successful when students just shut down and don’t engage
one of my favorite consistent features of being a Barnard lit major in Columbia classes were the students who gave up on LitHum readings after the first few weeks and compared everything they subsequently read to the Iliad
At elite colleges like Columbia, many students are showing up unprepared to read full books. It’s not that they don’t want to, @rosehorowitch writes. Middle and high schools have stopped teaching them how: https://t.co/mC5JpaC15M
@TheMuseSappho I haven’t sat down to read the article yet but I suspect part of what is actually driving this is that more students don’t have the skills to skim & rapidly synthesize information, so they end up reading nothing or spending way too much time on reading
anyway, I was assigned a novel or equivalent a week in some classes and read it; the problem wasn’t the novel, it was that I also had 5 other classes assigning the reading equivalent of a novel in the same week
meanwhile, I was slightly screwed when I took a class on Spenser and hadn’t read the Aeneid, so I read it over the chagim to catch up with all my Columbia classmates who understood the references

the main goal of stopping precocious puberty in some cases, as someone who was offered Lupron as a kid and declined, is making preteens feel better about their bodies. yet when they’re trans that’s suddenly dangerous!
Puberty blockers have been used to delay puberty in children and young people who start puberty much too early.
Use in those cases has been extensively tested (a very different indication from use in gender dysphoria) and has met strict safety requirements.
5/9
they offered me lupron when I was cis to make me taller and less awkward about my body. then when I was trans they did it to make me shorter and less awkward about my body. yet one is safe and the other is dangerous, apparently!
Keir Starmer has said he'd clock off work at 6pm if he became Prime Minister.
You deserve better than a part-time Prime Minister.
The only way to prevent this is to vote Conservative on Thursday.
The governor being able to unilaterally quash something that has been authorized by the state legislature *after* the money has been spent to implement it, is, uh, not good for democracy
