Our society has become increasingly tolerant of drug use, and our legalization laws reflect that shift. Combine that environment with the sense of invincibility and reckless behavior that often comes with youth, and we continue to see one tragic story after another.

At some point, we have to say enough is enough.

The argument that “alcohol is legal, so why not drugs?” makes little sense to me. Alcohol is legal—and it causes devastating consequences every year. But alcohol has also been embedded in human society for thousands of years, making its elimination unrealistic. That doesn't mean we should use one societal problem as justification for creating another.

We still have an opportunity to draw a line and say that widespread drug use has no place in a healthy, productive society. Addiction and drug abuse don't discriminate by income, background, or social status. They destroy lives and families across every part of society.

We need to recognize where this is heading and change course before even more lives are lost.
