This actually happened to Evernote. They took the advice of “keep talking to your customers and ship whatever they want” as the only guiding principle for product development. And what ended up happening was paying users liked it, but the product become unintuitive and feature overload for the new user. To the extent that they had to rebuild a version for the new user.

Users don’t always know if they really want something. It’s your job to take the extra step to think on their behalf: whether they really need this. Or can what they ask be done through something much simpler. Or can you solve multiple problems of different users with one new redesign rather than a bunch of changes. The right principle is: “Keep talking and listening to your users, spend the additional time thinking on their behalf what they actually want, and ship that”.

A reporter once came up to Muhammad Ali after a workout and asked,

“How many push-ups can you do?”

Ali, a three-time heavyweight world champion, responded,

“About eight or nine.”

The reporter looked bewildered.

“What? Just eight or nine?”

Ali's response was epic:

“I only start counting when I can’t do anymore.”

And then he blasted out another eight or nine reps.

A similar version of this story has Ali saying:

"I don't count the sit-ups. I only start counting when it starts hurting because they're the only ones that count. That's what makes you a champion."

Whether it's sit-ups or pushups, this reminds me of the 40% rule from David Goggins:

The 40% rule, is a term used to explain that when your mind and body are starting to tire and you feel like giving up, you’re only at 40% of what you are truly capable of achieving.

Challenge:

Try living by the 40 percent rule in your own life, whether it's during:
• exercise
• in relationships
• or in business

Challenge yourself to dig deeper, and to ignore the mental limits you place on yourself.

Takeaway:

Pain is not something you want to avoid all the time, because when we continuously subject ourselves to it, we only grow stronger. 

Your toughness is made up of equal parts persistence and experience.

You don't so much outrun your opponents as outlast and outsmart them, and the toughest opponent of all is the one inside your head.
