@TMR_et_al Participants did switch between stage 2 and 3 while the story played. With the data we collected, we could examine which stage particular words were played and whether that there were stronger memories for words played in stage 2 vs stage 3 or no difference. (1/2)
@TMR_et_al We waited until participants were in stable stage 2 sleep before playing the story and it was played straight for 7 minutes. We did not play the story in stage 1 as it is a lighter stage of sleep and participants could have formed explicit memories.
@TMR_et_al Thus most participants did not have arousals when the story played. We also did include an explicit memory task, which followed the implicit memory task. So for anyone that did have arousals and formed explicit memories, they would be excluded from the analysis. (2/2)
@TMR_et_al Hi Eitan, thank you! So during piloting we had participants awaken when we started playing the story once they were asleep. Then we changed the design so the participants fall asleep listening to a relaxing audio clip, so when the audio switched they would not be startled.(1/2)
@RachelKatzman It would also be interesting to have participants come in for an overnight study and not just a nap study. Thus, the story could be played repeatedly, giving the brain more chances to form and strengthen memories.
@RachelKatzman Thanks! One aspect is digging deeper into the role of sleep stages on memory formation. It would be interesting to look at specific sleep EEG characteristics and how they impact memory formation. For example slow-waves and K-complexes.
@metzpsych Also, I think it really changes future research questions, by challenging the past notion of the sleeping brain being dormant. Evidence shows the sleeping brain can track important stimuli, form implicit memories and even prepare task-relevant responses (Kouider et al., 2014).
@metzpsych Once you know how and when participants form memories during sleep, perhaps you could play participants a word list during sleep. Then see if the sleep encoding helps these participants learn this same word list faster than a control group which did not hear it during sleep.
@metzpsych Well, I think the research I did with Dr. Batterink opens the door to conducting research that looks at whether sleep encoding could help with wake learning.
@metzpsych So the next step seemed to be playing participants a whole story (~7 minutes long) and seeing whether they could form implicit memories of words they heard or related to the theme of the story.
@metzpsych Additionally, other researchers had played sleeping participants lists of words or word-pairs, and these researchers found evidence of the formation of implicit memories.

@m_springle I think the number of viewers might effect how empathetic you are to how they might feel looking at your message. It might be interesting to see how a person presents an invent while texting one friend, or two close friends, vs a group chat and seeing whether exaggeration changes
