A smoot is a hole left in a drystone wall for rabbits or other small animals to get through. I see many on my walks but this one (from Ambleside) has to be the most elaborate. A cathedral among smoots!

Ever wondered why flowers are so colourful? The vibrant hues we see are more than just a visual treat, they play a crucial role in pollination strategies and plant evolution! 🐝🌼
Each colour is designed to attract specific pollinators. Bees love blue and purple flowers, while hummingbirds are drawn to red blooms. Butterflies go for yellow and orange flowers.
Different pollinators have different visual preferences, so plants have evolved these colours to increase their chances of being visited by the right species!
Flowers don’t just appear colourful to us, they also have ultraviolet patterns that are visible to insects like bees! These UV patterns act as "landing guides," helping pollinators find nectar and pollen more easily.

This Hogmanay, we're asking residents in our local area to refrain from setting off fireworks, following the death of our red panda kit Roxie on bonfire night.

As always, we will do all we can to protect our animals from fireworks, including keeping them indoors and providing deep bedding where possible to reduce the impact of the noise.

@Edinburgh_CC cannot create a fireworks exclusion zone around the zoo in time for Hogmanay due to the minimum consultation period required, so we are asking residents to help us by not setting off fireworks which may frighten animals.
