@HenryChatfield It depends. If you know where you are and where you’re going to, a compass would serve you better. But if you don’t have those things figured out yet, a map will be of more value.
@AbelowRob is absolutely right on this 👇🏼
We need to find what’s the real value in music making in this new era we’re stepping into. New value propositions will shift market dynamics from creators and consumers to participatory experiences.
The line between music creator & consumer is about to get very blurry.
Think about this:
→ Apple Music has 90 million subscribers
→ Bandlab has 60 million music creators
Every 3 Apple listeners has 2 Bandlab creators vying for their ear!
How many of TikTok’s 1.6 billion users will join these ranks with their upcoming AI tools to “significantly lower the music creation barrier”?
Or Google’s MusicLM?
Or 100 others on the way.
This can be a good thing for capital "A" Artists. If done right. Interactivity > passivity.
Music’s big opportunity is creation.
Not consumption.

10k holders of their Deathbats Club were offered early access to NYC & LA shows in June.
It crushed
→ 1k members purchased
→ Incredible 10% conversion
Today they rolled it out for 13 more dates & made it avail to others

Back in 2003 when MySpace launched I told artists you must get on MySpace because it will be a brilliant way of connecting directly with your fans. They all said I don’t have time for that. I’m too busy touring.

@alexpickr Excellent article, @alexpickr! I agree with much of what you say and have a vision on how we could make use o NFTs that really accrue value with time. Would you be open to discuss it on a call?
@alexpickr I think I need to break down your question in two:
1. How would you listen to music?
I’d likely bring back my bought downloads and ripped CD tracks library. Still have it in an old iPod.
2. How would you discover new music?
TikTok, YouTube, radio, in that order.
