Federal Government ministers joined fishing industry stakeholders, traders, academics and specialists at the Somali Fisheries Stakeholders Forum: Challenges and Opportunities, held at the Jazeera Hotel in Mogadishu on Saturday and convened by the Somali Marine Resources Research Centre (SMRRC) and the Magan Forum.
Fisheries Minister Ahmed Hassan said Somali investors have moved into construction, banking, remittances, telecommunications and energy while holding back from fisheries, and urged them into a sector he described as open ground. Ports and Marine Transport Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur said the sea offers economic activity that land cannot match, from maritime transport and logistics to passenger travel and coastal tourism.
