For a 1500-year-old city, Earhart's arrival is still one of Derry's most important moments. One local developer said if she had set down in Belfast, they would never have built the Titanic Quarter there but instead celebrated a woman whose determination saw her overcome every barrier.
According to A People's History of Shantallow (Martin & Quinn, 2018), when Earhart touched down outside Derry, she asked a local labourer where she was - expecting the name of the country. He replied 'Cornshell' - giving her the name of the field!
