"This worsening sense of social well-being was noted in a Statistics Canada report... Torontonians were particularly less hopeful about the future, with renters & youth especially having a bleak outlook on life compared to homeowners & older demographics." https://t.co/5OrMipwouO
So many racist and xenophobic comments on the tragic death of Delphina Ngigi, a refugee from Kenya. I've worked with homeless people for 8+ years. Many arrived in Canada as refugees — from Iraq, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, everywhere — only to be pipelined into chronic homelessness because of a lack of housing and appropriate, culturally-sensitive support. There's no "refugees vs. homeless Canadians." It's a horrific continuum.
Israel is demolishing what remains of the houses, so it can't be restored.
This is a full-swing plan to destroy all houses in the south of #Gaza so that displaced people who were told to go to south TEMPORARILY can't return; this is same scenario as what happened in 1948 & after!
As explained by delegate:
Toronto Star- leading study found no consistent correlation between police budgets and crime in 20 major cities in Canada. #HamOnt
The Supreme Court announced it would hear a pivotal case that could decide if cities are allowed to fine or jail homeless people for sleeping outside

“I never could have imagined that I would need to write such a letter. The fact that this type of talk has completely left the far, unimportant fringes and came into the mainstream in such a massive way, for me it’s incomprehensible."

Making it more affordable to build does not guarantee that what is built is more affordable.
I'll say it again.
Making it more affordable to build does not guarantee that what is built is more affordable.
BREAKING: According to the UN World Food Programme @WFP, after 10 weeks of hostilities in #Gaza, half of the population is starving, with little access to food, water, and shelter. Under IHL the use of starvation of the civilian population as a method of warfare is prohibited.
Every day is housing day if you're homeless, a tenant fighting an above guideline rent increase, or just struggling to pay your rent or mortgage!
We know govts in 🇨🇦 can respond in ways that are more proportionate to the crisis at hand, but they clearly need to be cajoled and convinced to find new, creative + better ways to implement housing as a human right.
International Humanitarian Law is explicitly clear that hospitals and medical personnel must be protected. Attacks on hospitals are attacks on humanity.
Take action to uphold our shared humanity by demanding an immediate ceasefire in #Gaza.

MPP Sarah Jama has written to Ontario Premier Doug Ford asking him to walk back her being censured in the legislature — or else she will have to challenge it in the courts.
Homeless encampments will never satisfy governments’ obligations on the right to housing, but since they exist, the most constructive way forward is one that promotes dignity, human rights and well-being.

Palestinian children in Gaza hold a press conference outside Al Shifa hospital, speaking English so the world cannot pretend not to understand them: “We come now to shout and invite you to protect us; we want to live, we want peace… we want to live as the other children live.”
“I tell my students 'When you get these jobs that you have been so brilliantly trained for, remember that your real job is that if you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, your job is to empower somebody else. This is not just a grab-bag candy game.”
