This one hurts so bad for Iowa fans. Not only because of the L, but because the existential dread they’ve kept internalized for years is starting to surface publicly. Iowa is no longer THE school in the state and they know it. In 2025 it is undeniably cooler to be an Iowa St fan.
Iowa State is the school with consensus top 10 coaches leading their football and basketball programs. Iowa is the program firing coaches and begging others to retire. Iowa State is the school constantly ranked top 15 in both sports. Iowa is the school who has lost 10 straight against ranked teams. Iowa State is the school with their GOAT quarterback playing in the Super Bowl while his replacement is in Heisman conversations. Iowa is the school getting millions stolen by a 2nd straight potato pretending to be a QB. Iowa State is the school with an Olympic champ game winning shotting his way into face of the league NBA conversations. Iowa is the school who hasn’t had a notable NBA alum in decades. Iowa State is the school with 10 skill position players scoring touchdowns all over the NFL. Iowa is the school clinging to a couple tight ends. Iowa State is the school playing Clemson and Notre Dame and Oregon and Miami in bowl games. Iowa is the school stuck losing to mid SEC programs. Iowa State is the school perennially getting top 3 seeds in the NCAA tournament and invites to the elite Feastweek tournaments. Iowa is the school who hasn’t sniffed a 2nd weekend this century. Iowa State is the school having in-state talent making game winning plays in the rivalry. Iowa is the school losing all the games. Simply put Iowa State is the school having all the fun.
It’s been creeping up since Jamie Pollard was hired. 30 years ago the fanbases were split 80:20 in the state and media coverage leaned even deeper in Iowa’s favor. Now Iowa State is the larger university with the Midwest’s fastest growing city in its backyard and it is beginning to lean more cardinal than black. While Iowa fans have been ignorantly cheering on their own demise in the name of “Revenue!!!” with Big Ten expansion killing their Big Ten West safe haven, Iowa State has been silently grinding. They’ve created and are continuing to invest in 2 of the best gameday experiences in the country for their football and basketball fans while keeping it accessible to everyone. Meanwhile unless you’re a dentist or want to walk miles it’s impossible to become a new Iowa tailgater. While Iowa State’s fanbase is rapidly growing, especially with young people, Iowa’s has plateaued. Gone are the days every t-shirt fan in the state picking Iowa. It is simply easier and more fun to become an Iowa State fan.
Iowa State is on a rocket to the moon while Iowa is trending towards late 2010’s Nebraska status.
I called all of this happening 5 years ago by the way.
THEY said you were too young to be a COORDINATOR
THEY said you were too young to be a HEAD COACH
THEY said you cant BUILD programs now, you have to BUY them
THEY said you should take the money and move on to the NFL
THEY simply didn’t know the DAWG in YOU
Congrats on 100
