The final stop of the #Zambia 🇿🇲 site visit on Aug. 13 was the National Heart Hospital. Opened in 2022, it is Zambia's only hospital specializing in cardiovascular diseases, equipped with an oxygen plant & emergency power supply facilities. #medicaloxygen shortages emerged as a critical challenge for healthcare infrastructure during the COVID-19 pandemic. The two oxygen plants funded by the @GlobalFund are essential in supplying oxygen to 280 public healthcare facilities within Lusaka Province.
A frank & open discussion with representatives of the National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) allowed FGFJ's Diet Task Force to learn about the efforts put into launching the national health insurance scheme in #Zambia 🇿🇲 with the support of the @GlobalFund, and the challenges faced in sustaining funding & scaling up for expanded coverage.

The JATA project at Bauleni Health Centre started with a show of how community health workers sing, dance & beat the drums to gather people when they go out to do outreach & TB screening. The visit also allowed Diet Task Force members to see firsthand the use of FujiFilm’s portable X-ray machine, which enable easier delivery of services.
The FGFJ Diet Task Force visit to the Zambia National Public Health Institute & its laboratory demonstrated complementary & streamlined coordination between multilateral & bilateral assistance in the partnership between the @GlobalFund & JICA. By providing equipment & training personnel, this partnership led to successful surveillance & early containment of disease outbreaks.
Zambia has surpassed the 95-95-95 HIV targets – but adolescent girls & young women still account for 80% of new infections.
At the University Teaching Hospital, Japan’s @FGFJ_en Diet Task Force saw how support from Japan & @GlobalFund are expanding access to HIV services – with communities playing a key role in reaching the most vulnerable.
