Justice is the foundation on which human rights stand.
Earlier today, we paid a courtesy call to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to deepen engagement on advancing justice, accountability, and the rule of law.
Our discussions focused on protecting Article 37 Rights in relation to protest-related cases pending before the courts, the prosecution of peaceful protesters, and the need to develop human-rights compliant guidelines for policing peaceful assemblies. We committed to strengthening engagements with communities #KwaGround. We reaffirmed that an independent, fair, and people-centered justice system is essential to protecting the rights of everyone.

On #AmnestyReads: As reports of enforced disappearances, unlawful detention, and torture continue to emerge, many Kenyan families are still searching for answers about their missing loved ones. Irungu Houghton examines the gap between official statements and the testimonies of survivors, families, human rights defenders, and documented reports.

#SabaSaba is etched into Kenya's struggle for freedom and justice. From the historic July 7, 1990, protests demanding multiparty democracy and accountable leadership to today's youth-led movement for accountability, dignity, and good governance, #SabaSaba is a reminder that rights are won, protected, and defended by people who speak up.
We celebrated more than a leadership transition. We honored @irunguhoughton unwavering commitment, courageous leadership, and enduring legacy in the fight for human rights, while warmly welcoming @hakimorara to lead the next chapter of @AmnestyKenya .
Rooted in gratitude, strengthened by continuity, and inspired by hope, we move forward together with renewed resolve to defend human rights for all. Watch the highlights from a night that was.

A powerful transition of leadership for @AmnestyKenya leadership. Thank you @irunguhoughton for the leadership, friendship and mentorship.
And a warm welcome to you @hakimorara. We look forward to working together.
Best board of diverse, competent and committed human rights defenders to oversee the transition and support @hakimorara to take @AmnestyKenya a level up
Our dear colleague and friend @irunguhoughton is leaving @AmnestyKenya, handing the reins to Georges Morara. It is with deep sadness that I paid my farewell to him while in Nairobi. His leadership, courage, energy will be sorely missed. His contribution went beyond Kenya. His vision and ideas have deeply influenced Amnesty, bringing us closer to realising people’s power

I received Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Agnes Callamard and her delegation including George Morara, Executive Director, Amnesty International Kenya at my office. We discussed the human rights situation in Africa including in the Sudan and the centrality of Kenya’s peace building and peace keeping role. They presented me with their latest report on Sudan, ‘City under Siege, Children under Fire’, which documents the Al Fasher atrocities. I affirmed to the delegation Kenya’s firm support for an arms embargo and urgent ceasefire in Sudan. @ForeignOfficeKE@GenevaMissionKE@AmnestyKenya
Kenya has not yet ratified the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance, underscoring a global recognition that enforced disappearances are a serious human rights violation.

COURT STRIKES DOWN UNCONSTITUTIONAL PROVISIONS OF KENYA'S CYBERCRIMES AMENDMENT ACT
@ICJKenya, @article19org and @BakeKenya, with the support of @AmnestyKenya, welcome the High Court's landmark ruling declaring key provisions of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes (Amendment) Act, 2025 unconstitutional; a significant victory for digital rights, freedom of expression, and media freedom.
In a judgment delivered by Honourable Justice Patricia Nyaundi, the Court struck down Section 6(1) (j)(a) of the amended law, which had empowered the National Computer and Cybercrimes Coordination Committee (NC4) to disable access to websites and applications suspected of hosting content linked to terrorism, violent extremism, child sexual exploitation, and other unlawful activities.
The Court held that the provision granted sweeping censorship powers to an administrative body without adequate safeguards, infringing on constitutional protections for freedom of expression and media freedom.

Day 3 of the Data Governance Study Tour marked a significant milestone as the office convened a multi-stakeholder roundtable bringing together representatives from the private sector, civil society organizations, and Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) from across Africa.
The private sector and civil society organizations represented at the forum included @KCBInKenya , @awscloud (AWS), @SafaricomPLC, @Visa , @AmnestyKenya, the @Ke_Privacy_Pros Professionals Association (KPPA), and the @DataGovProsKe (DGPSK). Their participation enriched the discussions by bringing diverse industry expertise, practical experiences, and perspectives on the evolving data governance landscape.
The forum provided a valuable platform for open dialogue, enabling participants to exchange experiences, discuss emerging trends, and share practical best practices on data governance, cross-border data flows, regulatory compliance, and privacy protection. It also highlighted the unique perspectives and challenges faced by both regulators and organizations operating in the digital economy.
The roundtable further explored opportunities to strengthen regional cooperation, promote harmonized data protection frameworks across Africa, and create an enabling environment that safeguards individuals' rights while supporting innovation, digital trade, and sustainable economic growth.
As the study tour continues, ODPC remains committed to fostering dialogue, encouraging knowledge exchange, and strengthening partnerships that advance responsible data governance across the continent.
Our second #AmnestyReads by @KaniSharlene
examines Kenya’s social media ban for under-16s, and questions whether it addresses the real issue.
Borrowing from Australia’s model, the proposal risks ignoring Kenya’s digital access gaps and lived realities. If many young people are still struggling to get online, will restrictions protect them or leave them further behind?

Arrested in public. Never booked in the Occurrence Book. Days later, found abandoned on roadsides and in bushes, alleging torture and brutal beatings.
How many more promises to investigate before there is accountability? Kenyans deserve justice, not endless commitments. #EndEnforcedDisappearances #JusticeForOurFallen
The State, through the @NPSOfficial_KE , has noted allegations of enforced disappearances and torture and has committed to accountability, transparency, and thorough investigations.
However, constitutional obligations go beyond statements. What does Enforced Disappearance look like?

Davis Lichuma has been found alive, but in critical medical condition and unable to speak.
All seven individuals were arrested in full public view during the #JusticeForOurFallen procession. Days later, they have been found abandoned, alleging torture and severe beatings.
How does a lawful public arrest end with people being dumped on roadsides, critically injured? This is brutality and an assault on the Constitution and the rule of law. Those responsible must be identified, investigated and held accountable. #EndEnforcedDisappearances #JusticeForOurFallen
Comrade Lichuma has been found.!!!!
He is currently at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital receiving care, though he is in a really bad condition and he looks visibly shaken.

Today Mukuru Community Justice Centre joined families, comrades, and human rights defenders in a press briefing to condemn the enforced disappearance of Comrade Davis Lichuma and other Kenyans who remain missing. We stand in solidarity with the affected families and reaffirm that enforced disappearances, torture and arbitrary arrests have no place in a democratic society.Every missing person deserves to be found, every family deserves answers, and those responsible must be held accountable. We call for the immediate disclosure of the whereabouts of all missing persons, their safe return and independent investigations into these incidents.
