During our joint session on « strengthening the Protection of Women Human Rights Defenders through Access to Information » in Dakar, @AlfredBNkuru , Regional Director of @article19wafric , highlighted a harsh reality: women human rights defenders (WHRDs) face a double burden.
On the one hand, there are social barriers: the lack of safe spaces to engage with their communities and with one another. On the other hand, there are legal barriers: laws drafted without taking into account their specific needs and realities.
At the heart of this struggle lies access to information: both a fundamental right in its own right and the cornerstone upon which all other rights are defended.
To illustrate his point, he cited the case of Senegal, where female journalists were attacked during protests, not because they were journalists, but because they are women. Or the case in Mali, where a woman was executed for defending human rights.
In the face of this urgent situation, a two-pronged response is needed: strengthening legal protection for women and bringing about lasting change in social norms.

#Journalist shot dead in #Netrokona: The Int’l Federation of Journalists (#IFJ) condemns the brutal killing and calls for an urgent and thorough investigation.
Unidentified gunmen shot and killed journalist Lutfozzaman Fakir Alif at Uttarail Bazar in Netrokona, #Bangladesh on October 15.
Alif, the Netrokona correspondent for private media Internet Protocol Television’s (IPTV) channel Ruposhi Bangla, was fatally shot by two unidentified gunmen at around 8pm as he sat at a shop in the marketplace on the Shyamganj-Birishiri road in Netrokona in Kalkamanda Municipality.
As well as working with IPTV, Alif also ran the Facebook page “Detective Article”, where he investigated and published stories on suspected corruption, irregularities and crime. The week of his murder, Alif had allegedly posted some investigations into drug-trafficking and local smuggling networks.
The journalist survived a previous targeted attack on November 10, 2025, when he was hacked with a knife near Teribazar Ghat on the Someshwari River in Durgapur. The attackers in that incident are still yet to be identified.
@IFJGlobal General Secretary, Anthony Bellanger, said: “The brutal murder of journalist Lutfozzaman Fakir Alif is a direct and horrifying assault on press freedom. Despite its democratic transition, Bangladesh remains a deadly space for media workers with rampant impunity for crimes against journalists.”

Today, Hong Kong Watch wishes a very happy birthday and many wishes of hope to Joshua Wong 🎂
Starting as a student activist leader at the age of 14, Joshua spent much of his life fighting for the next generation of #HongKong. He is now spending his 30th birthday in prison.
From the anti-national education protests to the Umbrella Movement to the anti-extradition protests, Joshua’s courage, determination, and passion inspired the world.
Joshua faces the prospect of life imprisonment following his second conviction last month under the National Security Law. We continue to urge international governments to press for his immediate and unconditional release.
You can learn more about Joshua Wong and leave him a message on this website: https://t.co/GJn82UZCHR

The shutdown of Eye Radio’s website is an assault on the right to information in South Sudan.
It is a vital resource for journalists, activists, researchers, and the general public.
Authorities must restore access, and protect people’s rights now.
