Martin Scorsese on if criticism ever illuminate anything for him about his own work:
"Sometimes. There are people who actually go through the work and find similar themes, I find that interesting. But critics who talk about “the tracking shots lack moral conviction,” things like that, I don’t know what they’re talking about. That sort of thing drives me crazy. Or “the medium shots lack humility.” That’s another one that get’s me. Who wants humility? Forget it. You’re not going to get it here."
Seeing his works in person is sublime; a transcendent experience. Last time I was in the Rothko room at the Tate Modern in London, I just sat for two hours and fully immersed myself.
I think contrasting the women of Mann's films (itself not an element without valid critique) with the women of major comic films (eugh) is a actually a good way to highlight how agency ("power") and screentime are rarely inherent indicators of complexity or interiority
i don't personally seek out short films but i'm not going to give people crap for logging them because it's "artificially boosting" their stats or something. it's not that serious lmfao
@LingoUnbound I never understand this attitude at all. If you enjoy it, articulate why. Articulate what's good about it. Don't just say, "it's bad but I like it." Clearly you liked something about it.
@trash_is_good tbc I do really love all of these, and also quite a few of the ones below the top 20 as well. I tend to eschew rankings but felt like doing one since people have been talking about him. :)
Disabling notis for everything is honestly so good. This post got a lot of attention and I had no idea. I just see replies from my mutuals and it's great.
What's a "bad" movie that you absolutely LOVE?
Not necessarily a "guilty" pleasure. Don't love that term.
A movie with terrible reviews, questionable decisions, maybe some completely insane performances...
and you'll defend that bastard until the day you die. I want titles.
