There is no more tragic tale than that of Gelert, the faithful hound.
Returning from a hunting trip, Llewelyn finds his young child missing, the cradle overturned, and his dog, Gelert, smeared with blood.
To all appearances, the hound has taken and savaged the babe.
Llewelyn draws his sword, and kills the animal.
But as Gelert lets out his final whimpering breath, there is a cry from beneath the overturned cradle. The child is alive! And beside him, a dead wolf, slain by Gelert while protecting the child.
Llewelyn, overcome with grief, never smiles again.
