Fernanda from Brazil and Vicente from Spain, a couple who until today had safely visited 65 countries while travelling around the world on a motorcycle for the last 5 years, will no doubt regret adding India to their itinerary for the rest of their lives.

Fernanda has been bashed and gang #raped by 7 men in Jharkhand, India. The men also assaulted Vicente, leaving him with broken teeth and bruises. Indian police, who have a reputation for not only covering up #rape cases but also committing #rape themselves, have instructed Fernanda to remove her social media posts about the horrific crime.

India is one of the most dangerous places in the world for women. 49 crimes are committed against women every hour in India, with 89 women #raped each day; equating to a woman being sexually violated every 16 minutes. This is not a surprise considering that the Brahminical systems contained within Hinduism, followed by 82% of the Indian population, deem women as inferior. The entire foundations of Brahminism are oppressive, with Brahmin written Hindu scriptures relegating women to property owned first by their father, and then their husband, and painting them as sinful, unscrupulous, unfaithful and degenerate creatures who are driven only by sexual desires and needs. This is the root cause of Indian men believing that women are just sexual objects to be used, that consent is not necessary, and that #rape is a permissible act.

Women globally need to place India on their “do not travel” list. With one woman being #raped in the country every 16 minutes, travelling there is not only incredibly risky, it’s pure insanity.

PRESS RELEASE: THE WORLD SIKH ORGANIZATION OF CANADA CONDEMNS THE MISTREATMENT AND UNJUST DETENTION OF SIKH ACTIVISTS IN DIBRUGARH JAIL, ASSAM.

The ten Sikh detainees, including Bhai Amritpal Singh of the Waris Punjab De (WPD) organization, have endured nearly a year of detention without charges under India’s draconian National Security Act (NSA). The NSA, a colonial-era law, allows Indian authorities to indefinitely detain individuals without charges and transport them to any state in India for imprisonment. The Sikh detainees have now initiated a hunger strike to protest their mistreatment.

WSO President, Danish Singh, said today,

“The Sikh detainees in Dibrugarh are being held without charges for simply advocating for Sikh issues. Their detention is reflective of the Government of India's discriminatory treatment towards Sikhs and other marginalized communities.

We call for the immediate release of these Sikh detainees. The Government of India must be held accountable and uphold its obligations under international law.”
