Bishop John Keenan, the Bishop with responsibility for Marriage, Family and Life for the Bishopsโ Conference of Scotland, has welcomed Prime Minister Andy Burnhamโs call for the serious gaps in palliative and social care to be addressed before the Westminster Parliament considers assisted suicide legislation.
Bishop Keenan said:
โThe Prime Ministerโs intervention is both timely and welcome. We have a duty to ensure that every person approaching the end of life has access to the compassionate palliative and social care they deserve. No one should ever feel driven towards assisted suicide because they lack the care, support or dignity they need.
โWe were grateful that the Scottish Parliament resolutely rejected assisted suicide only recently. We hope this latest intervention will encourage Members of the Westminster Parliament to reflect carefully before taking a step that would fundamentally change the way our society cares for the sick and vulnerable.
โAs our Catholic Parliamentary Officer, Anthony Horan, has rightly said: โThe last thing the country needs is another divisive debate about assisted suicide. We need to make progress in improving palliative and social care, not offering vulnerable people state support to end their lives.โ I share that conviction wholeheartedly.
โThis is an opportunity to rethink the whole approach to assisted suicide. The compassionate response to suffering is never to help people end their lives, but to ensure they receive the high-quality care, love and accompaniment they need. Let us pray for all who are seriously ill, for their families and carers, and for those in public office, that they may always uphold the dignity of every human life and work to build a society that truly cares for its most vulnerable members.โ
@doufous@h5wnft4xdr@MeidasScotland@HendryMackenzie@scotgov@theSNP I could not agree more, in my village they have taken over many of the local activities. For example they flew the Butcher's Apron from the village green up until I & other locals reminded them they were in Scotland & the Saltire was our national flag.

And yet the 25-year-old continues to live fully, competing in front of family and a supporting nation at the Commonwealth Games.
His story transcends sport. Reminding us about the power of the human spirit.

Mass media is not covering this, but after Trump deported a Guatemalan couple, they were found bound, gagged, and shot to death in Guatemala.
Their 14-month-old daughter was found alive and dehydrated beside her motherโs body.
This is what Trumpโs deportation policy does.

Andy Burnham repeats the lie that people are claiming benefits and choosing not to work
There are now 4 people searching for work for every job available
More than 100,000 of these jobs are for the NHS who can't hire because their budget is frozen
The problem is JOBS
For all the tributes to #IanWood, most of us in the #VoteYes for #ScottishIndependence movement will remember him only for lying to save the "union"
There is no way he was unaware of further oil & gas reserves, so he lied - to the great and lasting detriment to Scotland
