My @LeverhulmeTrust project is coming to an end, and I have some exciting things to share. ‘Listening to Montreal’ brings together creative writing, geopoetics and oral history to explore the relationship between French and English within the city. 1/5
…@johnmaier_ in @unherd on Cory Leadbeater’s memoir of his time with Joan Didion,
@HarrysunSee in @clereviewbooks on a reissue of John Berger’s essay “Cataracts”,
@AMcMillanPoet in @Lit_Review on a biography of Thom Gunn, and
@tedgioia on love songs. Read now! (2/2)
As a late birthday present, I have an essay-review on John Berger and sight. I’ve wanted to publish something on Berger for a long time, and this is one of my favourite things I’ve written. Thanks to @clereviewbooks for taking it on.
"It is both within the custom of writerly sight, then, and a cruel irony, that Berger, whose popularity is most connected to Ways of Seeing, would later come to develop cataracts in both eyes."
@HarrysunSee on the blindness of Berger and Borges

"The result is a flesh-&-blood Waldo, ageing & suffering the degradations of lecture tours & unwanted social calls, the humid nights spent with women & men on his mind..."
@HarrysunSee reads a new biography of Ralph Waldo Emerson (pub. @PrincetonUPress)

First Substack: An essay I've had written for some time that seemed suited for here. On 'Creative Nonfiction,' New Journalism, classification, and how helpful these terms may or may not be (including an introduction that may or may not succeed):

Today is Soundscape Sunday! This week, we’re exploring Vieux-Rosemont and the Plateau, by way of Rue Masson and Avenue Laurier. There’s something nostalgic in each of these streets for me so this soundscape is close to my heart. https://t.co/rVkgwoLIRY
Today is Soundscape Sunday! This week, we’re at the foot of Mount Royal. I walked to the top many times in the past two years but this Peel Street entrance seemed particularly interesting, capturing the flow of tourists and locals in and out of the park. https://t.co/P1nyLrSQF4
In today’s Words in the City, we are ringing in the new year by looking at loving words around Montreal. This is the final post in the series but do send in your own finds and I’ll feature them in a later post. Happy New Year! https://t.co/XITtfrtkqn
In today’s ‘Words in the City,’ the final one for the year, I picked something properly festive: words of mental struggle. The holiday season is as good a time as any to reflect on depression, lethargy and burn out and the way these crop up around Montreal https://t.co/AMxvRLqqBl
Today is Soundscape Sunday! This week, we’re listening to Little Italy at the close of a week day. This is the last soundscape for a while, as I’ll be taking a break over the holidays. City sounds will return on January 7. https://t.co/dXnoYnyano
