MY CONCERNS ABOUT DIGITAL LOAN APPS

Recently, I have received a growing number of phone calls, direct messages, and personal complaints from individuals who are indebted to various loan applications, including platforms such as OPay, Moniepoint, and several others. This trend is becoming increasingly concerning.

What is particularly striking is that some of these borrowers do not have a stable source of income. They are unemployed, do not operate businesses, and do not receive regular salaries. Nevertheless, they are still able to access loans within minutes through these applications, with repayment schedules that sometimes commence within days or weeks, often accompanied by accumulating interest.

This situation raises several important questions.

First, to the digital lenders: what level of due diligence is conducted prior to the approval of these loans? Is there sufficient verification to ensure that a borrower has a realistic capacity to repay? Responsible lending should not end with the mere disbursement of funds.

Second, to the regulators—particularly the Central Bank of Nigeria (@cenbank), the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), @NDICNigeria and other relevant financial authorities—what safeguards are currently in place to ensure that digital lending is conducted responsibly? Are existing regulations adequate, and are they being effectively enforced?

I am particularly concerned because some borrowers are reportedly very young, while others are financially vulnerable. When repayment becomes unmanageable and debts continue to accumulate, aggressive debt recovery practices often follow, including repeated calls and messages to family members and acquaintances.

Beyond the immediate inconvenience, this raises a more profound concern. Could easy access to credit without proper affordability assessments be contributing to the vulnerability of some desperate young individuals, potentially pushing them toward unlawful activities in an attempt to repay debts or avoid harassment? If so, this is no longer merely a financial issue—it is a broader societal concern.

Finally, I would like to hear from legal practitioners. @babanyara_ When a digital loan becomes unpayable due to accumulated interest, what legal remedies are available to both borrowers and lenders? What protections does Nigerian law provide, and where should the boundary be drawn between legitimate debt recovery & harassment?

This is an important conversation that warrants serious attention. Financial inclusion must be encouraged, but it must be accompanied by responsible lending practices, robust consumer protection, and adequate financial education.

I was relaxing in front of my shop when a young cattle herder walked by with his herd. He stopped, stared at my shop for a while, and looked genuinely curious.

I smiled and said, "How about giving me one cow for free?"

Without hesitation, he replied, "What would you even do with a cow? You already have a shop!"

I laughed and said, "Then let's trade—you give me all your cows, and I'll give you my shop."

He shook his head. "No way!"

I invited him inside to enjoy the cool air from the fan. After a few seconds, he looked at me, smiled, and said, "You wouldn't last a day as a herder."

I couldn't stop laughing. Then I took a photo of him and showed it to him. The moment he saw himself, he burst into laughter.

We both laughed like old friends before he waved goodbye and continued on his journey with his cattle.
