How can we stop cancer from killing us?
"You have cancer"- one of the most terrifying phrases any of us could ever get. The diagnosis itself is like being thrown into a relentless, borderless battle with no clear end in sight.
After publishing an article on cancer yesterday,
If Burna Boy sings a song that becomes trendy and its punchline becomes a viral catchphrase, and a church choir or gospel singer takes the melody, beat, and rhythm of such a song and swaps the wordings with more Christian-sounding ones;
That song would not be a gospel song. It would be a song inspired by the flesh with its purpose being nothing but carnal gratification.
The goal of such a song would be a crafty means to enjoy the worldly pleasure that comes from worldly songs in a way that we don't feel godly guilt about it.
It should be the case that when we hear a gospel song, we shouldn't immediately identify the style of a worldly artist.
Gospel songs are not primarily for recreation but for edification. This is the edification that makes us holy and blameless for the appearance of Jesus.
BRETHREN, WE CANNOT JOKE WITH THE SONGS WE LISTEN TO!
We should not remix worldly songs with pious-sounding words and think we are worshipping God with it when we are merely gratifying the flesh!
Those who worship God must do it in spirit and in truth, the Bible says. The songs we listen to and worship God with must be inspired by the Holy Spirit.
To choirs and gospel singers, your primary responsibility is edification. This was why Paul commanded that our songs should teach and admonish in Colossians 3:16:
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God."
But why did Paul give this instruction? Look at the preceding statements from the same chapter:
5
"Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed, which is idolatry."
6
"Because of these, the wrath of God is coming."
7
"You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived."
Paul wants us to put to death all the works of the flesh, to abandon all gratifications of the flesh.
It is now clear that gospel songs are primarily means of edification to righteousness before anything else.
So, if Davido sings a popular song and we swap the lyrics for more pious ones, have we edified or gratified?
We would have corrupted God's flock and done a sinful thing. Let gospel music be inspired by Jesus, the Gospel Himself, and not by worldly singers who have no regard for God.
May the Lord keep leading us all.
May the Body of Christ be holy. Amen.
