As of late October 2026, the initiative (formally called the Vaccinology and Immunology Center) is a research study/protocol still in preparation. NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya and NIAID Acting Director John H. Powers III stated that NIH is finalizing the study protocol and anticipates launching it and beginning enrollment before the end of 2026. It expects to enroll several hundred participants initially (focused on adults with the most serious reported adverse effects after vaccination or long-term symptoms after infection).

Key operational details from NIH statements and reporting:Participants will enter only through research enrollment and attend scheduled study visits.
It will not accept walk-in patients or offer routine appointments or general clinical care to the public.
It is housed as a study within NIAID’s existing Vaccine Research Center (established 1999) at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, rather than as a fully independent new clinic with its own dedicated clinical operations.
Researchers aim to investigate biological mechanisms, risk factors, and potential care approaches, and to connect enrollees with appropriate treatment in their communities where possible.

Recent accounts (including a October 27 report citing an NIH official) confirm the protocol and eligibility criteria are still being finalized, with no patients enrolled under this study yet. Many years ago, I wrote a post for Huffington Post called, Even Among Misfits. It’s long deleted from the HuffPo site with the warning, “Removed to protect public health” or some such nonsense. It mentioned vaccines. And autism. THIRD RAIL!  ZAP!  Anyway, it was about how even in the disability world, autism gets short shrift. There’s precious little of the kindness and “awwwws” given to others.
Yesterday, I was walking through Lowe’s, on a mission to find a replacement dishwasher for my elderly Mom.  Like many of us old timers, I care for my three daughters, and I man the cameras and run much of the household for my Mom in Massachusetts.  Three years ago, she was a victim of  theft and fraud by a “trusted” handyman.  I unraveled it.  There’s a court case in Massachusetts. And now my sister, brother and I are her assisted living staff. From afar. I handle the lion’s share. My sister handles medical. My brother the financials. OK.
Lowe’s had this magnificent Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer lawn display for Christmas. I stopped. Stared. And almost cried. My oldest would love it. She is my Rudolph Christmas (1994) baby. We watch video snips all year long. Little did I know we’d move onto the Island of Misfit Toys like the Hotel California. We can never leave.
