It is impossible to miss the fact that the AI backlash grows stronger every day.

As teenagers die, young people find it harder to find jobs, creatives lose work & royalties, slop fills the airwaves, students cheat, we lose the ability to tell what's real, execs cut headcount, and at every turn AI shows signs of being unsafe and unfair, not just to its users, but to everyone.

AI itself isn't to blame. The blame is on the AI companies who are too desperate to 'win', too greedy, to build their products responsibly - and on those in government who succumb to the millions these companies spend on lobbying, and who cheer them on.

But the public sees the costs of AI. And it seems pretty clear that, if AI companies continue down the path they're on, the backlash will only continue to grow.

Lots more to say on this, but the US Copyright Office’s report on generative AI training is superb.

It rejects the idea that all gen AI training is fair use, and it makes it clear that licensing training data is the way forward. Plus it destroys a bunch of AI booster mantras along the way (‘it’s just like human learning’ etc.).

Extremely gratifying to see it laid out so sensibly and thoroughly, by the government body responsible for providing guidance on copyright law.

Peter Kyle, secretary of state for science, innovation & tech, is still misleading people on UK copyright law.

The UK’s copyright landscape has no lack of clarity; rights holders already have control (licensing training data for commercial gen AI is required by law).

It looks a lot like the government is simply trying to make things easier for AI companies.
