๐จLamine Yamal opens up on his heated conversation with Hansi Flick after the final whistle against Aston Villa:
๐๏ธ Reporter: We noticed you had a lengthy conversation with Hansi Flick after the final whistle. What was that about?
๐ฃ๏ธ Lamine Yamal: โHonestly, I was begging him wholeheartedly to reduce the defensive line. I wasnโt even trying to hide my frustration because I feel like weโre taking unnecessary risks.
We won today, but letโs be honest, Aston Villa had opportunities to hurt us. They didnโt take their chances, and thatโs the only reason weโre not having a completely different conversation right now.
๐๏ธ Reporter: So you believe Barcelona were lucky to escape some of those situations?
๐ฃ๏ธ Lamine Yamal: โAbsolutely. We cannot keep depending on our opponents missing chances. There were moments when one pass was enough to put their attackers through on goal. Imagine that happening against Bayern, PSG, Manchester City or Real Madrid.
I told him that when the big games come, weโre always finding ourselves in difficult situations because of this high defensive line. We give opponents too much space to attack, and then weโre forced to recover defensively.
๐๏ธ Reporter: What exactly was Flickโs response?
๐ฃ๏ธ Lamine Yamal: โHe told me itโs a high-risk, high-reward system. He believes that keeping the defensive line high allows us to control the game, press aggressively and suffocate our opponents.
I understand his football philosophy. Heโs the manager, and I respect his decisions, but I also told him that controlling possession doesnโt mean weโre controlling everything happening on the pitch.
๐๏ธ Reporter: Did he agree to consider your suggestion?
๐ฃ๏ธ Lamine Yamal: โNo, not really. He was very adamant about it. He kept explaining why the system works, and I kept telling him what I was seeing on the pitch.
I even told him that we cannot wait until we get punished in a Champions League knockout game before we start making adjustments. By then, it could be too late.
Iโm not asking us to abandon our identity. Iโm asking us to be smarter. We have incredible defenders, but even the best defenders in the world cannot spend 90 minutes defending huge spaces behind them.
๐๏ธ Reporter: Would you say this was a disagreement between you and the manager?
๐ฃ๏ธ Lamine Yamal: โWe disagreed, yes. Thatโs football. I want to win, he wants to win, and sometimes you have different opinions about how to achieve that.
But I hope he watches those situations again because I genuinely believe we need to make some changes. We cannot keep getting away with it and call it good defending.โ
