The last super El Niño erased $5.7 trillion from the global economy. The World Bank's official damage estimate was $45 billion. The undercount was more than 100x, and the one forming right now is forecast to be stronger.

In 1998, coffee and cocoa harvests failed, rice crops drowned, and grocery prices jumped worldwide. Peru's fishing industry collapsed in a single season. California got a month of nearly nonstop rain, with mudslides taking out entire neighborhoods. Insurance premiums in flood zones never came back down.

The same movie is loading now. Forecasters are calling for atmospheric rivers slamming California, ice storms from Texas across the Southeast, a strangely warm Canadian winter, and supercharged Pacific typhoons. Cocoa, coffee, and rice futures already started moving in May. Your chocolate bar and your morning coffee are the first places you'll feel a Pacific Ocean running 3 degrees hot.

And the pain outlasts the weather. Dartmouth tracked economies for a decade after each event and found the damage compounds for up to 14 years, because money that would have gone to growth goes to rebuilding instead. That's how a "$45 billion disaster" quietly became $5.7 trillion.

The strange part is how visible this is. Earthquakes give zero warning. Hurricanes give days. This one gave the world months, with odds climbing from 22% in March to above 90% now.

The most predictable trillion-dollar event on Earth, and almost nobody has changed a single plan.
