Delighted to share this long time in the making effort in collab w/ @thesmallpicture & @LDeshan which we hope will support engaged research & community-centered journalism projects

Today kicks off this year’s #NewsMatch campaign here at Resolve Philly!
With your help, we can raise important funding to keep our independent newsroom strong.
This is ridiculous. The public has lots of info needs beyond Trump & national politics. They ignore that coverage because they think it’s irrelevant to their lives. You can disagree (I do!) but MANY feel that way about politics. Writing them off as hopeless is the problem.
We need to pay close attention to the normalization of white nationalism and fascism through racist forms of joy and amusement. A white American tradition over the last 2 centuries that was momentarily interrupted by civil rights struggles. This seems like a good place to start
Philly has a list of mail ballots that have errors or are undeliverable. As of today, it has 3,358 names. Issues include missing signatures and dates, no secrecy envelope, and unverifiable IDs. Find out if you're affected and how to fix your ballot. https://t.co/cReqtPijaa
Small silver lining to WaPo episode: It shatters whatever illusion we might have that we could trust billionaires to rescue journalism. Such abuse of power underscores the dangerous political economy of media oligarchy, recenters class politics & highlights need for alternatives.

Now the Taliban have banned Afghan women from talking to each other even inside their own homes. At what point will the world be outraged by this misogyny? The dangers of this patriarchal and toxic project will have wider consequences in the region and the world.
How will the Taliban enforce this? Will vice and virtue police be able to enter people's private homes at any time? Will husbands and sons be trained to enforce these rules? https://t.co/WGJaMWuGHR
Much gratitude to @mujschool for welcoming @LDeshan & I to talk strategies for making journalism more equitable & community-centered. (& for the tiger-striped hospitality) cc: @dkiesow @Nick_Mathews
"Jailed reporters, silenced networks: What Trump says he'd do to the media if elected" by NPR's @davidfolkenflik is a model of "not the odds, but the stakes" reporting.
It collects the facts and sounds the alarm without a trace of 'both sides do it.'

As part of his dissertation research, @cratebeats (Ph.D. '24) recorded the stories of BIPOC media makers at @PhillyCAM. An interactive exhibit based on that research, "Telling Our Stories," is now on display on the 4th floor of City Hall: https://t.co/ZGyOGsjGVh @CreativePHL
While there are numerous ways to critically approach this (check out the smart essays in this forum!) we focused on the need to look more at local (journalism)building blocks of public spheres. While I had some flashbacks to grad school it was a treat to collab w/ Sandra!
My @USCAnnenberg advisor (who is way too cool for this platform) Dr. Sandra Ball-Rokeach took a gamble inviting me outside my comfort zone to collaboratively grapple w/ the new Habermas for this @IJoC_USC book forum: https://t.co/i901rIOP2Q
ICYMI @sojcagora recently dropped a follow up study “Advancing Community-Centered Journalism” which features fresh insights from @andreawenzel and other leading thinkers and practitioners in this space.

I keep thing about how a *major* US newspaper, the New York Post, printed a giant, destructive, easily disprovable lie on its front page
They have a *right* to print lies but there should be consequences. Ban them from the Pulitzers, etc. Kick them out of industry groups
For the past several years Jake Nelson, @LDeshan & I have been trying to get journalists & academics to connect more. In this @NiemanLab piece we took a moment to critically self-reflect on the messiness of this👇
This week, Free Press' @Media2070 project, @mediajustice and Black River Life will present the immersive installation Black Future Newsstand at Chicago's @GalleryGuichard.
