Quelle bassesse.

Happy Barrack is finally saying his thinking out loud: He was Prez Trump’s channel to Hezbollah, through Berri, when Trump said a few times that “we talked to Hezbollah.”
Barrack wanted Islam Abad channel and agreement to prevail at the expense of the elected Lebanese government and in favor of Hezbollah. He’s done everything he can to undermine the Lebanese-Israeli channel, a channel that’s the official policy of Prez Trump (and his idea, he called the Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors to the Oval Office to launch it) and Sec Rubio has been faithfully and skillfully implementing it.
This week Barrack denounced Israel for striking a Syrian airport to warn Turkey against taking it. Reports have it that Israel had cleared the strike with DC, which stayed silent, but Barrack was conducting his own policy and issued a strong statement against Israel.
Two contradictory US foreign policies in the Middle East spell doom, and it’s doom that we’re seeing.
And what’s Barrack’s idea? Concede to reality that Hezbollah rules Lebanon and Iran rules the region. Even Biden and Malley didn’t come up with such appeasement.
And by the way, his diplomacy has so far not resulted in resolving a single sticking issue anywhere in the Middle East. All he’s done is nodded to and helped Turkish expansion, including in Syria.

Yet another Lebanese Shia declaration of loyalty to Iran’s ayatollahs. She and I hold the same passport, but I don't see what we have in common beyond that. I find her political ideology—and her religious extremism—abhorrent, and her transnational loyalties fundamentally anti-Lebanese. Her camp is committed to a perpetual war with Israel; I want Lebanon to make peace with its southern neighbor as soon as possible. More importantly, I wish for Lebanese and Israeli societies to develop cordial relations as they should, and can.
I may disagree with aspects of American foreign policy here and there—for instance, I found Obama’s Iran policy dangerously naïve, and I have not forgotten that he allowed Bashar al-Assad to slaughter Syrians while he stood by—but I still identify deeply, both ideologically and emotionally, with Western democracies. The West is not foreign to me. But her Iranian axis very much is.
In short: her allies are my adversaries, and mine are hers. And yet we are somehow expected to transcend irreconcilable differences to celebrate the supposed harmony of Christianity and Islam in Lebanon. But the reality is less inspiring and has always been so. That “marriage” has never been harmonious and Lebanon is a failed experiment—post-1975 Cypriot is not.
I too grew up in Lebanon. When I was only five years old, Palestinian gunmen, in coordination with local militias, helped ethnically cleanse Christians from southern Mount Lebanon. In September 1983, they and their allies displaced tens of thousands of Christians from the Shouf and Aley regions, slaughtering at least 1,500 people in the process.
This was not an isolated episode. In January 1976, Palestinian factions carried out what was then the largest act of ethnic cleansing of the Lebanese Civil War in the coastal city of Damour. At least 300 civilians—women, children, and the elderly—were murdered, and thousands more were driven from their homes. These were Lebanese civilians, killed in their own country by foreign armed groups.
@TaghridAlMawed should be ashamed—unequivocally—for two reasons. First, she is falsifying history by portraying Palestinians as nothing more than victims in Lebanon. That is a distortion. Palestinian militias were not passive actors; they were perpetrators. They helped trigger the civil war in 1975, killed thousands of Lebanese Christians, contributed to the fragmentation of the country, and later turned their guns on one another (Abu Musa vs. Arafat) as well as on Lebanese factions such as Shia Amal during the War of the Camps (1985–1988). The scale of violence and devastation they inflicted on Lebanon—a country that had taken them in—cannot simply be erased or rewritten.
Second, and even more reprehensible, is her willingness to exploit the deaths of two recently killed individuals in Lebanon for political point-scoring. These deaths occurred in a context entirely unrelated to a civil war that ended 36 years ago. Yes, Pierre Moawad was a Lebanese Forces activist. But unlike Palestinian gangs in the camps, or Hezbollah, the Lebanese Forces have long disarmed and operate today as a political party. To circulate images of the newly dead in order to resurrect old conflicts and weaponize their deaths is not just irresponsible—it is morally indefensible. Then again I am not surprised because I expect no better from extremist Palestinian activists.
@TaghridAlMawed: shame on you.
📌💡🇮🇷🇺🇸 SURRENDER WEARING A VICTORY MASK
There is a simple test for determining whether a country has won its war: read the peace terms. If those terms are identical to what the "enemy" demanded before the first bomb fell, the war was simply lost.
By that test, Iran has never been further from victory.
Strip away the ornamental prose and the personal grandiosity from Mohammad Javad Zarif's article, and what remains is an indictment.
This is Zarif's vision of a settlement:
Iran constrains its nuclear program
Iran reduces its enriched uranium stockpiles to minimum thresholds
Iran ratifies the Additional Protocol
Iran subjects all its facilities to permanent international inspection
Iran transfers its enriched materials to a multilateral consortium it does not control
Iran reopens the Strait of Hormuz — its only instrument of meaningful coercion
Iran invites American oil companies back onto Iranian soil
And in return, Iran receives: sanctions relief, diplomatic normalization with America, and a non-aggression pact.
These are not the terms of a victorious power. These are precisely the terms the US and Israel demanded before a single shot was fired.
So the Islamic Republic, having absorbed weeks of bombardment, swallowed the assassination of its commanders, and endured the destruction of hundreds of facilities, has arrived, in the end, at the exact starting position it rejected, defined entirely by the side it claims to have defeated.
What is being marketed as "gains" is, in substance, an elaboration of the humiliation.
Iran now seeks the right to return to the status of a "normal state", the very status the revolution was built to repudiate, the condition its founders denounced as impotence and servitude.
This is not declaring victory. It is recanting its rebellion.
If Iran has demonstrated, as Zarif insists, that it cannot be militarily destroyed, that its programs are too dispersed to be erased by airstrikes, that its people are its ultimate weapon, then why does this supposedly indestructible power urgently require a written American pledge not to attack it again?
The answer is self-evident: because it cannot survive another round. A non-aggression pact is not the insurance policy of the victorious. It is the most desperate demand of an exhausted party teetering on the edge of collapse.
Then there is the identity crisis Zarif refuses to name. The Islamic Republic's legitimacy was constructed entirely on resistance to America, on the ritual chants of death to the Great Satan, on an educational system, a clerical apparatus, and a revolutionary mythology all organized around the axiom that accommodation with Washington is treason. You cannot normalize trade with America, restore diplomatic relations, sign a mutual non-aggression treaty, and remain the Islamic Republic as constituted in 1979. This agreement does not merely end a war. It compels Iran to become a different kind of state. That may be Iran's exit, but it is categorically not Iran's victory.
Which brings us to the most telling feature of the article, the one Zarif cannot see precisely because he is too busy congratulating himself on his own cleverness:
The victor does not need three thousand words to convince his people that he won.
Victory announces itself in the terms imposed on the weaker party. What requires three thousand words of emotional padding and insufferable self-congratulation, is persuading a people to accept a destination that runs in precisely the opposite direction from everything they were promised for half a century.
Since February 28th, regime supporters have chanted every night: No surrender, no compromise, we will fight America.Zarif acknowledges this. Then he spends his entire essay trying to convince them to accept exactly what they are demonstrating against.
That is not political sophistication. It is simply the longest possible way of saying: we lost.
@JZarif@ForeignAffairs
What is Hezbollah?
A terrorist group, a political party, a social welfare network and more, @Hbounassif says.
And who is pro-Hezbollah in Lebanon?

Our foreign minister Youssef Raggi is a patriot. Kicking the Mullahs' ambassador out of Lebanon is the right thing to do. That said, the ambassador can be counted on to stay in Beirut nonetheless. Will the failed Lebanese state ignore Raggi's decision rather than enforce it?
