I may have gone overboard with signage outside our house, but am determined to illustrate why we haven’t weeded the front pavement. We’re trying to make as much insect habitat as possible & have beautiful baby shieldbugs living in the long grass. #insectgarden#scicomm#nomow
With so many people on social media asking their councils to stop mowing wildflowers, this small area on a Cambridge street shows what's possible. Don’t know whether to congratulate residents or @camcitco – but thank you. Uplifting! #LetsBringNatureBack#biodiversity
GRASSLANDS! They are so important for our ecology/wildlife. With some good hedges/scrub around them/in them they create an amazing habitat. They are part of the EDGE. The edge habitat where 90% of our terrestrial species reside. You read that right - 90%
The Ouse and Humber Drainage Board have mown the embankment around Brough Airfield marsh and adjoining land today, destroying the Common Blue and Brown Argus colonies. Rare Breeding Birds still nesting. @seanpnrouse@YWTHullWildlife@ChrisGPackham@guardianeco
Zelensky: The fight in the Donbas “will surely go down in military history as one of the most brutal battles in Europe and for Europe.” He said about Russian forces: “We are dealing with absolute evil.” The Ukrainian president also repeated pleas for Western military assistance.
Yesterday Isabella showed me the Bee & Pyramidal orchids she had found on Oxford roundabout. She saw them first 2 years ago. Wrote to
@OxfordshireCC asking them to not mow. She was so pleased, she thought they had listened. This morning they mowed. #bbcspringwatch#heartbreaking
Do you work for the council ? Do you ride a mower ? If so please switch it off , dismount and walk away . Have a think - do you really need to be cutting that verge ? Are you destroying an important wildlife habitat ? Are you going to make the locals very , very angry ?
Being straightforward – to end the war we need heavy weapons parity:
1000 howitzers caliber 155 mm;
300 MLRS;
500 tanks;
2000 armored vehicles;
1000 drones.
Contact Group of Defense Ministers meeting is held in #Brussels on June 15. We are waiting for a decision.
#Ukraine is fighting the second largest army in the world. We have enough people to fight, but we don't have enough of the heavy weapons.
We continue asking our allies to increase the amount of weapons supplies that is being sent to Ukraine.
@TimesRadio
ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATED to see at least half of the critically endangered Man Orchids at @sspcampaign strimmed away to dust this morning. Alongside Common Spotted, Pyramidal & Bee orchids.
Reported to @NaturalEngland for investigation 😥
In Kherson region, a Ukrainian offensive advanced 9 km in the direction of Beryslav. Russian defences along the Inhulets River at Davydiv Brid collapsed. The rashists have retreated to Bruskyns'ke.
President @AndrzeyDuda says Germany has broken arms promises - @welt. Berlin did not give Poland the tanks. And he stated that the German government is doing too little to help Ukraine. Unfortunately this is true. The German people are with us and the government has its own game.
In an extremely rare moment of candour on Russian state TV today, defence columnist Mikhail Khodaryonok gave a damning assessment of Russia's war in Ukraine and his country's international isolation. It's fairly long but worth your time so I've added subtitles.
Russian occupiers entered the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol, the city mayor said. Heavy battles inside the plant where hundreds of people - civilians and soldiers - are hiding. There is no connection with Ukrainian defenders at Azovstal since this morning
BREAKING: Russian Major General Simonov was KILLED in a Ukrainian strike against a command post near Izyum, a city in eastern Ukraine that’s currently under Russian military occupation.
#Ukraine The residents of Demydiv flooded their village intentionally, along with a vast expanse of fields and bogs around it, creating a quagmire that thwarted a Russian tank assault on Kyiv and bought the army precious time to prepare defenses.
I was on hand to watch workers dismantling the Ukraine-Russia friendship statue today in Kyiv — it stood since 1982, now 2 months into the war, this probably isn’t what Moscow had in mind…
Grass which is never sat on or walked on (except by the person who mows it) does not need mowing more than once a year, preferably in late summer. Mowing for cosmetic effect only is wrong. Someone once used the term ‘ecological tidiness disorder’ to describe this kind of thing.
It's ironic that the photo chosen by the UK government to celebrate Earth Day shows an utterly devastated landscape. All of it is below the treeline, but there's not a tree to be seen. Helvellyn here, like most of the Lake District National Park, has been grazed to death.
