@DanNeidle @ChrisGiles_ Obviously it would be silly to tax that labour but it's also silly to suggest somehow those families are disadvantaged by the current system when the reverse is true.

@DanNeidle @ChrisGiles_ I would go further and say leisure time is the lesser issue, the big one is the entirely untaxed labour often being given for childcare, domestic work etc etc. Full time parents with high earning spouses are essentially self employed by the family unit.

It is the sad legacy of Johnson that conservatives like Simon Clarke who would have recoiled in disgust at this policy 10 years ago now see it as existential to their party. They have completely and totally lost their way at this point.

@DeTeReR @Gilesyb This is my thinking too. Young couples rarely rent a place larger than they need but when they buy, they would love a spare room or two to start a family so homes moving from rental market to owner occupied may mean a reduction in the supply of housing.

@CarterPaddy @BernardsNick @DanielaGabor Yeah, that's a fair point. When the price of energy commodities goes up, the cost of buying a renewables project does too so returns stay the same. The cost of drilling a new well on an existing oil field doesn't increase by the same proportion so returns on that capex increase.

@BernardsNick @CarterPaddy @DanielaGabor And as paddy points out above, average project returns always trend back to cost of capital over time until equilibrium is hit (though the market has an infuriating habit of moving on before we ever actually get there)

@BernardsNick @CarterPaddy @DanielaGabor My daily experience (whilst notably a sample size of one!) leads me to conclude differently on both counts. I work in renewables capital markets (private equity). Oil majors can struggle there precisely because they can't match the cost of capital.
