The gym charged me a couples membership cancellation fee.

I have a single membership and I've never added anyone to my account.

The charge hit yesterday: ¥38,000, i went to the front desk this morning.

Me: What's this fee for?

Staff: Couples membership dissolution. Your partner removed herself from the account.

Me: I don't have a partner on the account.

She checked the computer.

Staff: Shows here you upgraded to couples in April 2023.

I've had a single membership since 2024.

She printed the account history, membership start: April 4, 2023.

Type: Couples (primary).

Secondary member added: April 4, 2023.

Name: 中村 恵美 (Nakamura Emi).

Me: I joined in January 2024. Alone.

Staff: This shows continuous membership from April 2023.

She turned the monitor.

My name. My birthday. My current address, member ID photo from 2023.

It was me.

Younger haircut. Same face.

Me: Who took that photo?

Staff: You would've submitted it during registration.

I've never seen it before, she scrolled down.

The secondary member had her own photo on file.

Woman, late twenties, shoulder-length hair, neutral expression.

I didn't recognize her.

Check-in history showed we came together twice a week, Always evening. Always Tuesdays and Fridays.

Last joint check-in: March 15, 2025.

Me: When did she cancel?

Staff: Last week. She called and requested removal from the membership.

Me: Did she say why?

The staff looked uncomfortable.

Staff: The note says 'personal reasons.'

Me: Can I have her contact information?

Staff: We can't give that out. Privacy policy.

Me: She was on my account.

Staff: She's not anymore.

I asked to see the original couples registration form, the manager came out.

Manager: That would be in archive. Physical signature required for couples adds, so it's paper.

He went to the back, twenty minutes later he returned with a plastic sleeve.

Two forms inside.

Primary member application: my name, my signature.

Secondary member consent: her name, her signature, both signed April 4, 2023.

Third page: relationship declaration.

Box checked: 婚約者 (fiancée).

My signature looked right, same as my current gym contract, same as my residence card.

Manager: Is there a problem?

Me: I didn't sign this.

Manager: We require in-person signatures for couples registration.

Me: I wasn't in Japan in April 2023.

He looked at the member photo again.

Manager: That's not you?

Me: It is. But I don't know when that was taken.

I went home and searched my photo library, found the matching haircut: March 2023.

I was in San Francisco, i checked flights. I didn't come to Japan until December 2023.

But I searched my emails anyway.

Found a booking confirmation: ANA 1087, SFO–NRT, March 28, 2023.

Return flight April 8, 2023, i don't remember booking it.

I checked my credit card statement from March 2023, the flight was there: ¥187,600.

I called ANA.

Asked if they could confirm I was on that flight.

Agent: Checked in at SFO. Seat 24K. Baggage: one checked, one carry-on.

Me: Do you keep records of passport scans?

Agent: No, but immigration would.

I filed a disclosure request with Japanese immigration, it came back in four days.

Entry stamp: March 29, 2023, Narita Airport.

Departure stamp: April 8, 2023, Narita Airport.

Both under my passport number.

I went back to the gym with my passport, showed the manager the stamps.

Manager: So you were here.

Me: I don't remember it.

Manager: You came here six times during that period.

He showed me the check-in log.

March 30, April 2, April 4, April 5, April 6, April 7.

All evening check-ins.

April 4 shows two entries: me at 6:47 p.m., Nakamura Emi at 6:51 p.m.

First couples check-in.

Me: Do you have security footage from April 2023?

Manager: Deleted after 90 days.

Me: Any other records? Locker assignments, class bookings?

He checked.......🧵
