A new briefing paper from the Institute of Economic Affairs - London has warned that a ban on disposable vapes ‘could cost lives’ and that it would be more effective to focus on enforcing existing regulations than to outlaw an entire product category.

“The Centre for Economics and Business Research found the UK vape sector had an aggregate turnover of £2.8bn and supported almost 18,000 full-time equivalent jobs across in 2021...since then, the UK adult vaping population has grown by almost 30%."
He also said such a move would only 'fuel a dangerous black market' and highlighted the British government's 'historically balances and pragmatic' approach towards tobacco harm reduction as the best way forward.
New research from Material Focus revealed five million single-use vapes are thrown away every week and that 70 percent of people threw their devices away because they ‘didn’t know they could be recycled’.
If the environmental impact of single-use e-cigarettes – which has become a key challenge and a top priority for our industry - is to be addressed, we must correct the perception that the recyclability of the actual products is the main problem....
French PM Elisabeth Borne should abandon this ban, which could have severe unintended consequences, and instead pursue balanced measures which consider the cessation potential of disposables while ensuring they are only used by adult smokers looking to move away from cigarettes.
Our senior director of Corporate Affairs Mohammed Agrabawi – who previously led PMI’s anti-illicit trade function in Jordan and the Palestine Authority Area – has a first-hand understanding of the challenges of illicit products and warns of their link with youth vaping.
