Your child’s SEN provision is a legal entitlement, so you hire a solicitor to sue the council for it. The council spends more fighting you than the support would have cost.

Physio is a forty week wait. Your back does not have forty weeks.

Schools teach in portable cabins bolted to the playground because the actual building is held up by aerated concrete and hope.
Half of them are technically insolvent.

Parents fund the reading books, the glue sticks, the photocopier, the roof and increasingly the teachers wages - all via a PTA raffle and local fundraisers.

The state offers “free” childcare hours that don’t cover the nursery’s costs, so the nursery bills you a “top up fee” for the free thing.

Shoplifting under £200 is functionally legal, so Tesco hires guards - who crucially don’t even try to stop it - and you pay for them in the price of the milk.

999 takes an hour, so you buy the Ring doorbell, gather the evidence, file the report and get a crime number for the insurance you also pay for.

Court backlogs run to years, so anyone with money settles privately and everyone else gets nothing.

Legal aid is gone. Represent yourself.

You pay National Insurance for fifty years and they move the pension age.

You pay the adult social care precept every year and then sell your mother’s house to pay for adult social care.

Leaseholders pay for a “waking watch” because the state signed off the cladding and then billed the residents to fix it.

Social housing sits on the most valuable land in Britain, allocated by need rather than proximity to work, 48% of zone 1 social housing is occupied by foreigners mostly welfare dependent - while the nurses, teachers and other workers who keep zone 1 running commute ninety minutes each way from Kent because we stopped building anything in 1979.

Every one of these is a service you have already bought. The receipt is your payslip.

The tax burden is heading for its highest sustained level since the 1940s. The service level is the worst in living memory.

You are not overtaxed or underserved. You are actually BOTH, simultaneously, and the gap between the two is where your standard of living went.

The state has become a subscription you cannot cancel and cannot use.

I worked in pandemic planning for 20 years. I was in the HHS command center for the first month of the pandemic.
We did everything wrong, against all our plans, the CDC/Fauci/Birx are responsible for it.
The path to dealing with pandemics has been known for millennia:
Protect the vulnerable (seniors in this case),
isolate the sick,
quarantine the exposed,
build herd immunity among the low risk population.

We instead isolated those at lowest risk, ignored post-infection immunity, prevented herd immunity, packed the most vulnerable into congregate living spaces with those currently ill (i.e., seniors), and made no attempt to determine the level of asymptomatic infection and natural immunity in the population.

I watched infighting between CDC and ASPR, with CDC refusing to share transmissibility or secondary attack rate information within HHS. I saw NIH, ASPR, CDC, and OASH folks fight over turf, instead of focusing on the disease.
I saw "the professionals" discard decades of preparedness and planning, and simply make stuff up as they went.

I saw public health officials at the local and state level play "hide the ball" with data and information, refusing to share it with policymakers, and refusing to justify their declarations and restrictions.
No discussions about the negative impact of their decisions. We know that hundreds of thousands have died from delayed cancer, cardiac, and other screenings of treatments.

The entire public health infrastructure, from local to national, failed miserably, with health "leaders" more interested in protecting their new-found authority than in protecting the public.
They have utterly destroyed their credibility, and millions have died and will die from that loss of trust.
And I grieve, because it didn't have to be this way.

Jeremy Clarkson lets slip a number on Clarkson's Farm that explains almost everything wrong with British food. A sausage from his own pigs costs 74p. The identical sausage made from imported pig meat costs 18p.

Most people hear that and assume the foreign farmer is simply better at it.

Britain outlawed the sow stall in 1999, alone in Europe bar Sweden, because the public here decided a pregnant animal ought to be able to turn around. The national pig herd then fell by roughly half.

British people did not eat half as much bacon.

Work out where the difference went. Twenty-seven years on, the National Pig Association reckons around 95 percent of the countries selling pork into Britain still permit the stall. Most of the EU allows four weeks of every cycle. Much of America allows the full sixteen-week gestation. Brazil allows it outright.

The sow was never spared. She was moved abroad, into a shed with looser rules and no British inspector, and the farm that would have kept her shut its gate.

Now watch the same thing happen to beef and lamb, on a far bigger scale.

British beef is grass. Native cattle standing out in the rain on ground that grows nothing else, doing what they have done on those hills since before the language was written down. What the NFU says we are being asked to compete against is a feedlot finishing up to 50,000 head on one site, which it called unacceptable here on both moral and environmental grounds.

The deals were signed anyway. Australian and New Zealand beef rises to a quota of 110,000 tonnes by 2033, and after that there is no tariff at all. Lamb runs to 60,000 tonnes this year and climbs from there, and we already import between a quarter and a third of what we eat.

Every one of those deals was announced with a firm assurance that food standards would not fall. That assurance is true, and it is beside the point.

The standards enforced at our border cover what is in the meat. Hormones stay banned, and rightly. What crosses untouched is how the animal lived. There is no border check for a feedlot, no tariff on a gestation crate, no form anywhere asking whether the thing we made illegal here was used to make the thing arriving here.

So a minister can say food standards are protected and back British farming in the same breath, and be telling the truth twice, while signing the document that finishes the job.

The pattern runs through the lot. Barren cages banned here in 2012, egg products still arriving from countries that use them. Force-feeding outlawed in 2007, foie gras on sale every Christmas.

And the campaigners who won those bans never once came back to see what happened next, because the victory was legislative and the consequence was six thousand miles away. Nobody counts sows in Iowa. Nobody films a feedlot in Queensland.

Clarkson absorbs that 56p on every plate that leaves his kitchen, on television, which is the only reason anybody can see the number at all. Inside a supermarket price it has been invisible for a quarter of a century.

Fifty-six pence is what this country charges a man for obeying it.

He is not competing with foreign farmers. He is competing with his own ban, on a shelf, standing next to the version of himself he was forbidden from being.

A skydiver outside a Beechcraft C90 King Air captured the plane stalling and spinning right next to them during a jump run at 16,000 ft over Mossel Bay, South Africa in October 2021.

Too many jumpers hanging in the “float” position outside the door shifted the center of gravity aft and blanked airflow over the left horizontal stabilizer. The nose pitched up past the elevator’s authority, the wing dropped, and it entered a spin. The pilot (who later posted a detailed account) cut power, centralized the controls, applied opposite rudder, and recovered cleanly. Plane and all the jumpers made it back fine.

The camera work is insane, steady, composed, and somehow still framing the aircraft while everything is going sideways.

One of those rare “you had to see it to believe it” aviation/skydiving moments.

Waitrose sold 193 percent more thick-cut British sirloin after the fourth series of Clarkson's Farm went out. Jersey Royals up 89 percent. Red Leicester up 50. Cox apples up 52, Gala up 30, British asparagus up 25. One television programme about a man losing money in a field moved the meat counter of a national supermarket chain by figures no marketing budget in this country has ever bought.

Then look at what happened at the shop itself.

Diddly Squat opened its farm shop in 2020 and people drove across counties to stand in a queue in a field for it. Traffic backed down the lane. Clarkson admitted in front of the village that the place had been swamped, while pointing out that the village shop, the village cafe and the village pub were all taking more money than before.

That is the demand. Now the paperwork.

The shop's planning permission legally caps what it may sell: produce from the holding, or from producers inside a 16 mile radius, or whatever else the council will agree to in writing. His agents asked for 30 miles and were given 16. In January 2022 the restaurant was refused, on the grounds that a farm building on a farm was out of keeping with the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In August that year the council issued an enforcement notice, describing the operation as unsustainable and incompatible with its countryside location, and ordered the dining areas shut. The appeal in June 2023 saved the shop, the cafe and the car park for three years. The restaurant was refused again, and the inspector ruled that six weeks was ample time to put the land back the way it had been.

Six weeks to undo a farm building. Two years to get permission for one.

Now sit with the shape of this. Every government of the past twenty years has stood up and said the words food security, shorten the supply chain, support British farming, buy British. A man then built the shortest food chain in England, forty yards from the field to the till with nobody taking a cut in between, and the machinery of the state spent three years making it smaller.

Meanwhile the country answered the question nobody actually asked it. Acceptances onto agricultural degree courses rose 8 percent in 2024 and are up around 20 percent since 2019. Britain has roughly 1,580 farm retailers employing 25,000 people, and the Farm Retail Association reckons the tax changes could shut as many as half of them.

Nobody in this country needs persuading to buy food from a farmer. They queue for two hours in a field for the privilege, in the rain, in a place with one road in.

The queue formed on its own. It took three years, two appeals and a planning inspectorate to make it shorter.

Setting a final closure date of 30th June for the ‘overseas sheep shearer visa’ just shows how out of touch this Labour government is with British agriculture.

For years, entry has been granted to approximately 50 to 75 skilled overseas sheep shearers from Australia and New Zealand who have arrived each season to help shear millions of our sheep during our peak summer months.

When this year’s visas expire, that’s it. The government have close the door.

And let’s remember, the government only granted this year’s visas due to sustained pressure by the sheep sector and the Conservatives.

The Home Office state the livestock sector must transition fully to domestic labour.

But expecting the industry to magically replace this specialised global workforce overnight while ignoring the severe risks of fly strike, heat stress, and general animal welfare is reckless.

Farms don't need arbitrary bureaucratic deadlines; they need practical support.

This government must stop pulling the rug out from under our livestock farmers, get a grip and realise that not enabling this relationship to continue is hugely detrimental for animal welfare and our sheep industry.
