Tackling hate crime is a key part of our work to ensure that people can travel around our city with confidence on public transport.
To mark National Hate Crime Awareness Week, @TfL is funding hundreds of free Active Bystander Awareness sessions to support Londoners to speak up.
From our work at @IBVprev we know that hate crime is massively underreported to police e.g. our research with @HateCrime_Leics shows just 1 in 10 East and Southeast Asian victims report their experiences. This is similar for other communities. https://t.co/nbT6qfpvuF.
🚨 New statistics on police-recorded hate crime in England and Wales (year ending March 2024) have been released: https://t.co/A4gPuyR0ZJ. Overall recorded incidents fell by 5% to 140,561. Racially motivated crimes remain the most common (98,799), despite a 5% drop.
The Home Office suggests that changes in police recording practices and a return to pre-pandemic levels may explain the decrease. But does this tell the full story?
Tell MAMA recorded almost 5,000 anti-Muslim cases a year on from 7 October

Attended an insightful conference @IBVprev on hate crime today, attended by the deputy mayor Sophie Linden. We’re hopeful they listen and invest more in community workers & training, so the police is better equipped to support their community with respect, equity & understanding.
Great to visit the participants of our Hate Crime Outreach and Resilience Project with @IBVPrev, funded by @MayorofLondon - helping trusted community organisations respond to hate crimes targeted at their members.

Today, we published a statement urging the new government to place prevention, protection and social cohesion at the heart of policy-making.
The unravelling of our social fabric happened quickly, and by few hands.
But a new future is possible 🧵

Identity-based mass violence is rising as impunity & inaction grip the very institutions & rules established in the pursuit of a safer world.
The next government cannot afford to deprioritise the gravity of the international landscape.
