Approximately 30 people died from immediate blast trauma and acute radiation syndrome (ARS) in the seconds to months after the Chernobyl disaster in April 1986.
Eight months after the nuclear accident, workers made a surprising discovery.
When they entered a corridor below the damaged No. 4 reactor, they found a a black, lava-like substance flowing from the reactor core, resembling a man-made volcano.
Among these hardened masses, one stood out, and the crew gave it the nickname "Elephant's Foot" because of its resemblance to the foot of the large mammal.
Elephant's Foot is a solid mass of melted nuclear fuel mixed with concrete, sand and core sealing material.
At the time of its discovery, Elephant's Foot was emitting approximately 8,000 to 10,000 roentgens, or 80 to 100 grays, per hour, delivering a lethal dose of radiation (4.5 grays) within just five minutes.
Now that’s what I call a send-off

@JohnSunCricket Butler-about as inspiring as a bucket of boiled cabbage. The Hundred! No meaningful 50 over competition thanks to the Hundred. Lack of any developing spinners due to the Hundred! 20/20 cricket in general!
@AndyRoden1@RMTunion@northernassist Whilst the RMT actively pursue a bring back British Rail narrative. It’s incredible to think that the RMT want more government control. Incredible!
@RAIL Hallelujah somebody that actually understands this, and yet the RMT persists with its re-nationalisation narrative. It’s incredible that the union leadership are asking for more of this at the same time as protesting against it!
@gmcooke63 I don’t blame the Aussies it’s a test match and it’s stifling runs, great tactic. Pope and Duckett brain dead I agree sit it out they’ll soon get tired no Lyon now
@LloydGriffith great night watching the show at the priory in Louth went rapidly down hill with a parking ticket, and blown out tyre. Bet you got back to London quicker, tour will be great!
@brucemillington It’s greed motivated, are they going to reduce ticket prices by a seventh if they go 6 races 5 days. Will annual memberships be increased by 1/16. The answer is no and yes. Prices will stay the same festival week for one less race plus the extra and AM will increase dramatically.
@pipdunn@EastMidRailway@LNER I’m sure it’ll be to do with PTI testing. Until a unit has been stopped and all of the door gaps at each station have been risk assessed then they’ll not be able to be used.
