@peskyblinker@eigenrobot If a fire station can effectively serve 10,000 people, do you want to live in a service area of 10,000 people, or one that nominally has 10,000 people but really has 12,000 because they only counted citizens?
@Firebrandt76@koyoteprime@eigenrobot To be clear, I'm not saying that II is positive *because* of something about the illegality. I'm saying that immigration is an overwhelming positive and the illegality doesn't significantly detract from that
@Firebrandt76@koyoteprime@eigenrobot To the extent that illegal immigration is a problem- I still say it's a net positive for our country- the AI workpocalypse that's coming for all of us will certainly dampen enthusiasm for coming, so much of this will be moot
@Firebrandt76@koyoteprime@eigenrobot It is a big one! I've started to see the pendulum swing back though. Lots of guys in the local rec soccer program excited to be electricians and such. "Everyone needs to go to college" was such a mistake
@RobertRobeast@koyoteprime@eigenrobot People who cross the Gulf in rafts or trek through the desert in order to slowly work their way up from roofer to landscaper are precisely the sort of work-ethic infusion we need.
@Firebrandt76@koyoteprime@eigenrobot I'm all in favor of labor getting more leverage. The issue is preventing the market from disappearing entirely. At the wages Americans are willing to pick lettuce, everyone will switch to kale, then nobody associated with lettuce gets anything.
@RobertRobeast@koyoteprime@eigenrobot At one point the purpose was to provide a place for ambitious refugees to make their mark. And yes, commit fewer crimes.
@Firebrandt76@koyoteprime@eigenrobot I live near Baltimore, where there haven't been a lot of deportations but there has been a huge investment in community policing. Ymmv. And I'm not arguing to lower wages (there's laws!) but there are mismatches in the labor market that immigrants help address.
@koyoteprime@WellitHappened1@eigenrobot I explain what I *want* elsewhere, and what I'll settle for is the status quo while nativists seethe. But we have a similar demographic problem as every other western country. We also have a source of young, ambitious workers that we're turning away because???
@koyoteprime@CapnCrunchfash@eigenrobot You do make a good point that there's a potential for exploiting the undocumented workforce. So let's document them!
@koyoteprime@CapnCrunchfash@eigenrobot I don't want them undocumented. My ideal system would pair effective border control with trivially easy legal access for law abiders. That isn't passable in Congress thanks to the right, so my second option is letting them in the back door
@koyoteprime@eigenrobot I don't understand why things have to come to a head at all, or frankly why it's a crisis. Illegals are prolonging the solvency of SS, commit fewer crimes than citizens, and add a lot of liquidity to the labor market. *Rationally* this should go on forever, or perhaps increase
