In honor of #Juneteenth, here are some facts about Black representation in State Legislatures.

Below are the states that saw the most progress in Black representation since 2010 and those that took a step backwards.

In 2022, Black Americans are under-represented in State Legislatures relative to their state populations in 25 states. In 2010, Black Americans were under-represented in 37 State Legislatures.

Since the 2020 elections, there have been 181 new members elected or appointed to state legislatures across the country. Happy to report that these new members are significantly more representative of the states and districts they serve.

Of the 84 new female state legislators, 60.7% are members of the Democratic Party, while 39.2% are members of the Republican Party.
